| Barton ECA project awarded $2000 of the $14,500 four year grant, to conduct summer youth recreation program in conjunction with summer school breakfast and hot lunch program | June 7 | |
| Barton recreation program is open four days a week, Monday through Thursday from 9am to 1pm. It offers children ages 6-12 a choice of activities each day. Over the month of July class choices includes two certification classes--babysitting and boat safety. Other choices are bike safety, stilt walking, doll making, mask making, knot tying, dancing, food fun and nutrition from UVM Extension, library stories and games, and various sports. Twenty youth ages 10-13 are monitored for choices and progress in the ECA project for developing high self esteem. Cathy Poginy is hired to be the project coordinator and the site boasts an average of six community volunteer who work in the program each day. |

| The ECA steering committee meets twice a month to plan July summer recreation program. The ECA program has become an anchor for the public school summer breakfast and hot lunch program, a large literacy grant from the Vermont Council on the Humanities, and the Barton FOCUS nursery and preschool day care program. Katherine French, a resident of Cambridge Mass. who summers on Lake Willoughby secured the literacy grant after working as a volunteer in the 1994 summer recreation program | March | |
| ECA Committee is offered the opportunity to build and train on a project using portable equipment for Youth adventure based programs. Presently working with summer coordinator, Cathy Poginy on organizing volunteers and classes for the July program and finding available people to work on the portable adventure program in June before teachers and others in education are free from school. | April | |
| Summer Program 150 pre-registered, Program ran for 18 days for a total of 72 hours. Grant for $10,000 received from Vermont Council for Humanities. Summer Youth Adventure was implemented with 48 hours of instruction. |

| Summer Recreation Program--3 days/week in conjunction with summer breakfast and lunch preschool-8th grade, this included a Literacy Program with Catherine French, Thursday and Friday, Reading/Tutoring with Cathy Poginy, Talking with TJ, and Babysitting Basics. Outside grants include: $4986 from Vermont Council for Humanities, $2000 from Vermont Community Foundation, $800 from Vermont Council of the Arts, and $500 from the Barton Focus Group. |
