Letter of introduction for Joseph Torrey to H. Edwards & Co. by Porter Denny & Co. for purposes of securing credit in Europe to by books and apparatus for the University. This will be handed to you by Professor Joseph Torrey  -  who visits Europe for the purpose of making investments for the University of Vermont. It affords us pleasure us pleasure to be able to further his views by giving him an introduction to you + requesting for him your friendly advise and assistance whenever needed by him - Professor Torrey will invest for the University about $10,000, - A part will be invested on the Continent   + a part in England - We have ben requested to offer credits for him as such sums as we shall receive for that purpose - and we will keep you advised of the amt received which you will consider subject  to Mr. Torrey’s order - And which you will ___ pay him in Paris, or furnish him in a credit in England as may be desired by Mr. Torrey - We have already received for this object the sum of three thousand five hundred dollars - which you will therefore hold subject to the order of Mr. Torrey advising __ from time to time of the amt paid him.

We hand you enclosed a line of introduction - to our  correspondents at Havre - Also a letter to Mr. H. Edwards & Co Paris - The last will answer the purpose of introducing you to those gentlemen as well as that of a letter of ___ on them to be used as you shall think proper. Ye shall find a dup. of our letter to Mr. H. Edwards & Co direct to them by an early packet - And we ___  ___ you will find them willing to render you all the assistance in their power. W. Benedict has requested us to give you such information as to the shipment  ___ of the diverse articles purchased by you as will cause the least trouble here; so far as it relates to the purchasing , packing, & shipment is – unnecessary for us to make any remarks. - An invoice of each shipment should accompany the packages & and should be addressed to us with a B/ L of the articles shipped which should be consigned to us. The invoice should specify the diverse objects contained in the packages shipped & their cost. I should be headed as follows - “ Invoice of ____ packages containing sundries purchased by order for accounts ___ of the University of Vermont “ & if convenient to you it should be sworn to before the American Consul by you as one of the faculty of the University - stating in the oath that the said university is a chartered institution - The oath is required before the goods can be entered - and if not furnished  you  - must be obtained by one of the faculty at Burlington.  Mr. H. Edwards & Co.   Will furnish you with a letter to our Partner Mr.  A. F. Stoddard - whom you will probably find in London & whom we shall request to facilitate you in every way possible. - Wishing you a prosperous voyage & a safe return after completing the project you have in view - we remain

Making together the sum of                  $ 3000

Which with the sum of Five Hundred Dollars before received makes a total of $3500 to your ___

 The draft on Mr. Taylor has not as yet been paid, he being absent from the city. It will be presented on his return.  Agreeable to your request we hand you ____xed a copy of our letter to Mr. H. Edwards & Co. which was handed to Mr. Liney.

  In our private letter to Mr. H. Edwards & Co. we state more fully Mr. Liney’s ___ and we (request, require) there to ___ Mr. Limy in such a manner as will enable him to  ___ for the ___ objects ___ ___ if they should amount to more than the funds in hand.  We believe there will be no difficulty in ___ of ___ money as ___.

  Mr. Liney embarked on Sunday the 8th on board the ship Tully.
