1. Dictum Lo now, there a virgin is pregnant and will bring forth a son then, and she will call him Immanuel.2. Aria Ye joyful lips, bestir yourselves! To give Immanuel due honor Let joyful songs of thanks now echo; Say that to us men for our good He hath now taken flesh and blood, To whom there is no angel like. Ye joyful lips, bestir yourselves! 3. Chorale Oh, my pearl thou and precious crown, Of God and Mary the true Son, A king born of the mighty! My heart calls thee the lily’s bloom, Thy soothing Evangelium Is purest milk and honey. Oh, my Blossom, Oh, hosanna, Heav’nly manna, Which we’ve eaten, By me thou art not forgotten. 4. Recit. We mortals formerly were dead in error And did not know where we should turn. But henceforth hath the Highest’s power Through this Immanuel To us brought life and strength and health, So that we may in hope find grace and bliss. And this is why We here presently intend A sacrifice of joy to kindle. 5. Aria Only Immanuel Doth make the oil of joy Within our tempels’ faith to burn, For that us nought from God divides Now that our sin hath been put off, And God hath us for bliss inscribed, This did Immanuel. 6. Chorale This hath he all for us now done His great love to show alone. Rejoice then all Christianity, Give thanks for this eternally. © Copyright Z. Philip Ambrose |
