Und nach zween Tagen war Ostern, und die Tage der süssen Brodte.  Und die Hohen-Priester und Schrifftgelehrten suchten, wie sie ihn mit Listen griffen und tödteten.  Sie sprachen aber:

Ja nicht auf das Fest, daß nicht ein Aufruhr im volck werde.

Und da er zu Bethanien war, in Simonis, des Außätzigen Hause, und saß zu Tische, da kam ein Weib, die hatte ein Glaß mit ungefälschtem und köstlichen Narden-Wasser;  Und sie zerbrach das Glaß, und goß es auf sein Haupt.  Da waren etliche die wurden unwillig und sprachen:

Was soll doch dieser Unrath?   Man könte das Wasser mehr denn um dreyhundert Groschen verkaufft haben, und dasselbe den Armen geben.

Jesus aber sprach:

Lasset sie zufrieden;  was bekümmert ihr sie.  'sie hat ein gut Werck an mir gethan.  Ihr habt allezeit Armen bey euch, und wenn ihr wollet, könnet ihr ihnen Gutes thun!  Mich aber habet ihr nicht allezeit.  Sie hat gethan, was sie konte;  Sie ist zuvor kommen, meinen Leichnam zu salben zu meinem Begräbniß.  Warlich, ich sage euch:  Wo dis Evangelium geprediget wird in aller Welt, da wird man auch das sagen zu ihrem Gedächtniß, das sie ietzt gethan hat.

Und Judas Ischarioth, einer von den Zwölffen, gieng hin zu den Hohen-Priestern, daß er ihn verriethe.  Da sie das höreten, wurden sie froh, und verhiessen ihm das Geld zu geben.  Und er suchete, wie er ihn füglich verriethe.

Mir hat die Welt trüglich gericht,
Mit Lügen und mit falschem G'dicht,

Und er sandte seiner Jünger zween, und sprach zu ihnen:

Gehet hin in die Stadt, und es wird euch ein Mensch begegnen, der trägt einen Krug mit Wasser, folget ihm nach, und wo er eingehet, da sprecht zu dem Hauß-Wirth:  Der Meister läßt dir sagen:  Wo ist das Gast-Hauß, darinnen ich das Oster-Lamm esse mit meinen Jüngern?  Und er wird euch einen grossen Saal zeigen, der gepflastert und bereitet ist, daselbst richtet für uns zu.

Und die Jünger giengen aus, und kamen in die Stadt, und funden, wie er ihnen gesget hatte, und bereiteten das Oster- Lamm.  Am Abend aber kam er mit den Zwölffen.  Und als sie zu Tische sassen, und assen, sprach Jesus:

Warlich, ich sage euch, einer unter euch, der mit mir isset, wird mich verrathen.

Und sie wurden traurig, und sagten zu ihm, einer nach dem andern:  Bin ichs?

Einer aus den Zwölffen, der mit mir in die Schüssel tauchet.  Zwar des Menschen Sohn gehet hin, wie von ihm geschrieben stehet.  Wehe aber dem Menschen, durch welchen des Menschen Sohn verrathen wird;  Es wäre demselben Menschen besser, daß er nie gebohren wäre.

Und indem sie assen, nahm Jesus das Brodt, danckete und brachs, und gabs ihnen, und sprach:

Nehmet, esset, das ist mein Leib.

Und nahm den Kelch, und danckete, und gab ihnen den;  und sie truncken alle daraus.  Und er sprach zu ihnen:

Das ist mein Blut des Neuen Testaments, das für viele vergossen wird.  Warlich, ich sage euch, daß ich hinfort nicht trincken werde vom Gewächse des Weinstocks, biß auf den Tag, da ichs neu trincke in dem Reich Gottes.

Ihr werdet euch in dieser Nacht alle an mir ärgern.  Denn es stehet geschrieben:  Ich werde den Hirten schlagen, und die Schaafe werden sich zerstreuen.  Aber nachdem ich auferstehe, will ich vor euch hingehen in Galiläam.

Wach auf, o Mensch, vom Sünden-Schlaf,

Und gieng wieder hin, und betete, und sprach dieselbigen Worte.  Und kam wieder, und fand sie abermahl schlafend, (denn ihre Augen waren voll Schlafs,) und wusten nicht, was sie ihm antworteten.  Und er kam zum drittenmahl und sprach zu ihnen:

Ach wollt ihr nun schlafen und ruhen?  Es ist gnug, die Stund ist kommen.  Siehe, des Menschen Sohn wird überantwortet in der Sünder Hände.  Stehet auf, lasset uns gehen;  Der mich verräth, ist nahe.

Und alsbald, da er noch redete, kam herzu Judas, der Zwölffen einer, und eine große Schaar mit ihm, mit Schwerdtern und mit Stangen, von den Hohen-Priestern und Schrifftgelehrten und Aeltesten.  Und der Verräther hatte ihnen ein Zeichen gegeben, und gesagt:  Welchen ich küssen werde, der ists;  Den greiffet, und führet ihn gewiß.  Und da er kam, trat er bald zu ihm, und sprach zu ihm:

Rabbi, Rabbi.

Die aber legten ihre Hände an ihn, und griffen ihn.  Einer aber von denen, die dabey stunden, zog sein Schwerd aus, und schlug des Hohen-Priesters Knecht, und hieb ihm ein Ohr ab.  Und Jesus antwortete und sprach zu ihnen:

Ihr seyd ausgegangen, als zu einem Mörder, mit Schwerden und mit Stangen, mich zu fahen.  Ich bin täglich bey euch im Tempel gewesen, und habe gelehret, und ihr habt mich nicht gegriffen.  Aber auf daß die Schrifft erfüllet werde.

Jesu, ohne Missethat,
Im Garten vorhanden,
Da man dich gebunden hat
Fest mit harten Banden.
Wenn uns will der böse Feind

Und die Jünger verließen ihn alle, und flohen.  Und es war ein Jüngling, der folgete ihm nach, der war mit Leinwand bekleidet auf der blosen Haut;  und die Jünglinge griffen ihn.  Er aber ließ den Leinwand fahren und flohe bloß von ihnen.

Ich will hier bey dir stehen,
Verlaße mich doch nicht,
Von dir will ich nicht gehen,

Und sie führeten Jesum zu dem Hohen-Priester, dahin zusammen kommen waren alle Hohe Priester und Aeltesten und Schrifftgelehrten.  Petrus aber folget ihnen nach von ferne, biß hinein in des Hohen Priesters Pallast;  und er war da, und saß bey den Knechten, und wärmete sich bey dem Licht.  Aber die Hohen Priester und der gantze Rath suchten Zeugniß wider Jesum, auf daß sie ihm zum Tode brächten;  und funden nichts.  Viel gaben falsch Zeugniß wider ihn, aber ihr Zeugniß stimmetenicht überein.  Und etliche stunden auf, und gaben falsch Zeugniß wider ihn, und sprachen:

Wir haben gehöret, daß er sagete:  Ich will den Tempel, der mit Händen gemachet ist, abbrechen, und in dreyen Tagen einen andern bauen, der nicht mit Händen gemacht sey.

Was Menschen Krafft und Witz anfäht,
Soll uns billig nicht schrecken,
Er sitzet an der höchsten Stätt,

Wenn sies aufs klügste greiffen an,

Was dürffen wir weiter Zeugen?  Ihr habet gehöret die Gottes- Lästerung.  Was düncket euch?

Sie aber verdammeten ihn alle, daß er des Todes schuldig wäre.  Da fiengen an etlich ihn zu verspeyen, und zu verdecken sein Angesicht, und mit Fäusten zu schlagen, und zu ihm zu sagen:

Und bald am Morgen hielten die Hohen-Priester einen Rath mit den Aeltesten und Schrifftgelehrten, dazu der gantze Rath, und bunden Jesum, und führeten ihn hin, und überantworteten ihn Pilato.  Und Pilatus fraget ihn:

Bist du ein König der Jüden?

Er antwortet aber, und sprach zu ihm:

Du sagests.

Und die Hohen-Priester beschuldigten ihn hart.  Pilatus aber fragete ihn abermahl, und sprach:

(Pilatus)
Antwortest du nichts?  Siehe, wie hart sie dich verklagen.

Jesus aber antwortete nichts mehr, also, daß sich auch Pilatus verwunderte.  Er pflegete aber ihnen auf das Oster-Fest einen Gefangenen loß zu geben, welchen sie begehrten.  Es war aber, einer genannt Barabbas, gefangen mit den Aufrührischen die im Aufruhr einen Mord begangen hatten.  Und das Volck gieng hinauf, und bath, daß er thäte, wie er pflegete.  Pilatus aber antwortete ihnen:

Wollet ihr, daß ich euch den König der Jügen loß gebe.

Denn er wuste, daß ihn die Hohen-Priester aus Neid überantwortet hatten.  Aber die Hohen-Priester reitzten das Volck, daß er ihnen viel lieber den Barabbam loß gebe.  Pilatus aber antwortete wiederum, und sprach zu ihnen:

Was wollet ihr denn, das ich thue dem, den ihr schuldigt, er sey ein König der Jüden?

It was now two days before Passover and the feast of Unleavened Bread. And the chief priests and scribes were seeking how to arrest him by stealth, and kill him; for they said:

And while he was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at table, a woman came with a glass jar of pure and precious nard; and she broke the jar and poured it over his head. But there were some who were indignant and said:

What point hath all this nonsense? For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred dinarii and the sum given to the poor.

And they led Jesus to the high priest, where all the chief priests and elders and scribes had assembled. But Peter followed them at a distance, as far as the court of the high priest's palace; and he was there and sat by the servants and warmed himself by the firelight. But the chief priests and the whole council sought witness against Jesus, that they might put him to death, and found none. Many bore false witness against him, but their witness did not agree. And some arose and bore false witness against him and said:

We have heard him say, "I will destroy the temple which has been made with hands and in three days build another which is not made with hands."

But their testimony still did not agree.

And they brought him to the place called Golgotha, which is to be interpreted the place of a skull. And they gave him wine mingled with myrrh to drink, and he did not take it. And when they had crucified him, they divided his garments and cast lots to see who would receive each part.

Beside thy tomb and its great stone
Will I alway, my Jesus, pasture,
And for this thy most worth passion
With heartfelt joy and thanks be glad.
Lo, this the title thou shalt merit:
My life shall come from this thy death,

And in myself have buried Jesus.
