Create A Custom Dictionary

Access custom dictionaries Tools | Options | Spelling & Grammar | Custom Dictionaries
Add a pre-existing custom dictionary Tools | Options | Spelling & Grammar | Custom Dictionaries.
  • Click Add.
  • Navigate to the dictionary.
  • Add many words to a custom dictionary

    To add a large number of words at once:

    • Click File and Open in Word.
    • Locate the custom directory file you want to add words to, and open it.
    • The dictionary file may be in a folder at C:/DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS/[your name]/APPLICATION DATA/MICROSOFT/PROOF.
    • Make sure All Files is selected in the Files Of Type drop-down menu.
    • If you can't find this folder, it may be hidden. Click Start, (Settings), Control Panel, Folder Options, and View. Select the Show Hidden Files And Folders option. If all else fails, perform a search for files with the .DIC file extension..
    • The dictionary behaves like any other plaintext file. Enter new words, one per line by pressing ENTER, or copy and paste words from another document.
    • Save the dictionary when you are finished. A warning will appear asking you whether you want to save the file in plaintext format. Click Yes and close the file.
    Add one word to custom dictionary
    • Open the Custom Dictionaries dialog box..
    • Highlight the dictionary to which you are going to add a word and click Modify.
    • A dialog box appears with a Word field where you can enter a word you want to add to the dictionary.
    • Click Add. Below that is a larger box, Dictionary, that contains the words you have added.
    • Select one and click Delete if you want to remove it.

    • You can also add words to a specified dictionary, other than Custom.dic, in the middle of a spell check.
    • When the checker identifies what it thinks is a misspelled word, click Options in the Spelling And Grammar | Custom Dictionaries.
    • There should be dictionaries named Custom.dic and the other custom dictionaries created.
    • Select the dictionary you want to add the word to and click Change Default.
    • Click OK.
    • OK, and Add To Dictionary.
    • Open the Custom Dictionaries dialog box to switch the default back to Custom.dic if you want.
    Create custom dictionary
    • Tools | Options | Spelling & Grammar | Custom Dictionaries.
    • Click New and name the dictionary.

    • Tools | Options | Spelling & Grammar | Custom Dictionaries.
    • Select custom dictionary, click Change Default.
    Use a custom dictionary Tools | Options | Spelling & Grammar | check beside Check Spelling as You Type
