SAS Institute products, including DOS, Windows, Macintosh, and Power Macintosh versions, are available to UVM affiliates for $300 (DOS) or $400 (Windows, Mac, PowerMac). The DOS version includes Base SAS, SAS/STAT, SAS/GRAPH, SAS/ETS, SAS/FSP, SAS/AF, SAS/OR, SAS/QC, SAS/IML, and SAS/ASSIST. The Windows and Macintosh versions include all modules above, as well as SAS/INSIGHT, SAS/LAB, SAS/EIS, SAS/ACCESS, SAS/SPECTRAVIEW, SAS/GIS and several others.
Release 6.04 is the current DOS version and will never be upgraded due to the limitations of DOS. Support for this version by SAS Institute will eventually be dropped. This version will run well on any computer with at least a 386 processor, 640K of RAM, and 20 to 50 megabytes of disk storage.
Release 6.12 is the current Windows version. This version runs under Windows 3.1, Windows for Workgroups 3.11, Windows 95, and Windows NT 3.51 and 4.0. Since this is a 32-bit application, the Win32S extensions to Windows are required (for Windows 3.1 and Windows for Workgroups 3.11 only). The SAS installation media includes the Win32S extensions if they are not installed on your system. A 486 or Pentium processor is recommended with at least 8 megabytes of RAM (12 or 16 Mb of RAM is recommended by SAS Institute for acceptable performance). For Windows 95 and Windows NT, RAM requirements are a minimum of 16 MB, with more recommended for acceptable performance. Disk space requirements can range from about 100 megabytes to more than 300 megabytes. Since not all SAS modules may be desired, disk requirements will vary depending on the number and size of modules installed.
Release 6.10 is the current Macintosh and Power Macintosh version. System 7.5 or greater is required for all Macs and AppleScript is required for the Power Mac. The SAS System for Macintosh will run on any Macintosh with a Motorola 68020 or 68030 chip with a floating point math coprocessor (FPU) or on any Power Mac. It will not run on a Macintosh with a Motorola 68LC040 chip. A minimum of 8 megabytes of contiguous free memory is required, with 18 megabytes of contiguous free memory recommended. Disk space requirements can range from about 100 megabytes to nearly 200 megabytes. Space requirements are dependent on the number and size of modules installed.
The fees stated above are one-time charges which include all future upgrades. Manuals are available separately and may be ordered through the University store or directly from SAS Institute, Inc..
SPSS Inc. products, including Windows, Macintosh, and Power Macintosh versions, are available to UVM affiliates for $200. Effective May 1, 1997, the price was dropped from $400. The modules which have been licensed include Base SPSS, Advanced Statistics, Professional Statistics, Tables, and LISREL. Although LISREL is still available, it has recently been replaced with AMOS, a more graphically-oriented structural equations modelling program. Neither LISREL nor AMOS is available for the Macintosh.
The current release for Windows 3.1 and Windows for Workgroups 3.11 is version 6.1.3. The requirements for acceptable performance of this version are: DOS 3.1 or later, Windows 3.1 or later, at least a 33 Mhz 80486DX processor with 8 MB of RAM or more, at least 20 MB of hard disk space, Windows running in enhanced mode with at least a 10 MB permanent swap file, SmartDrive with a Windows cache size of at least 512K, and the Win32S extensions. The SPSS setup installs Win32S if it is not currently installed on your system. Version 6.1.3 will also run under Windows 95 and Windows NT 3.51 and 4.0.
The current release for Windows 95 and Windows NT is 7.5. The requirements for acceptable performance of this version are: Windows 95 or Windows NT, at least a 33 Mhz 80486DX processor with 16 MB of RAM or more, and at least 45 MB of hard disk space. Version 7 will not run under Windows 3.1. Improvements over version 6.1.3 include: dramatically improved presentation of output, flexible new pivot tables to analyze results, a new General Linear Models procedure, and improvements to the help system.
The Macintosh release (version 6.1.1) requires the following: System 7.0 or later, a Motorola 68030 or 68040 chip with a floating point unit (FPU), 16 MB or more of RAM (or 8 MB of RAM with RAM Doubler), at least 20 MB of hard disk space, a monitor with at least 640 x 400 resolution, Apple Shared Library Manager 1.1.2 or higher (supplied with SPSS). The Power Macintosh release (also version 6.1.1) requires any Power Macintosh with similar RAM and disk space requirements. It does not require Apple Shared Library Manager and can make use of virtual memory.
