Joyce Marx Flynn ’48, of Ft. Myers, Florida, had a negative mammogram just six weeks before she found a lump that turned out to be a Stage 2, infiltrating carcinoma. Two things helped her through it, she says. Her nodes were clear and her surgeon’s physician’s assistant got her through the shock because she also had had breast cancer. Joyce chose mastectomy over lumpectomy to avoid radiation treatments, but she also wanted reconstruction. A third-grade teacher at the time — in 1990 — she took spring semester off and had a saline implant. It hemorrhaged and had to be repeated the next day. When summer came, Joyce had reduction surgery in her other breast for symmetry and comfort and has had no after-effects from either surgery.
