The UVM Boulder, a sphere of granite crafted by nature and discovered during railroad construction in the 1840s near Hartford, Vermont. A two-horse team hauled the trophy to UVM, where it was placed in the location it continues to stand. Rival schools used to paint the boulder before big games, but it stays pretty clean and secure (after being bolted down in 1947) these days in front of Old Mill.

Best student prank
Mary Pratt, a graduate student in geology from 1968 to 1972, is responsible for a unique specimen, the mysterious fibrous paramite ball, in UVM’s Geology Museum. While completing a summer research project on Lake Champlain, Mary and her co-workers wound a ball of discarded strands of parafilm. One night they decided to give it an official looking label, place it in the collection, and see how long it lasted. After puzzling tour guides for years, the mystery was unraveled during museum renovations in 1992. The ball, however, remains intact and is still on display.
