VERMONT AGRICULTURAL EXPERIMENT STATION AND UNIVERSITY OF VERMONT EXTENSION
Annual Report 2015
Program Goal Area: Food Safety
Barlow, John Food Safety from Milking to Marketing for Vermont Artisanal Cheese Maker
Determine food safety and extension gaps and opportunities for Vermont's artisanal cheese makers
Barlow, John Mastitis Resistance to Enhance Dairy Food Safety
Describe pathogen virulence factors, antimicrobial resistance, and molecular epidemiology of Staphylococcus aureus and other Staphylococci in key sectors of the dairy industry in Vermont in order to improve mastitis control practices and food safety
Barlow, John Duration of Immunity to Vaccination of Cattle with Human Ad5FMDV Vacine
Determine the duration of protection for a new Foot and Mouth Disease Virus vaccine
Barlow, John Determination of Duration of Immunity Conferred by Ad5FMDV Vaccination of Cattle
Determine the duration of protection for a new Foot and Mouth Disease Virus vaccine
Barlow, John BREAD: A Modern Approach for the Development of Cattle Vaccines for Critical Bovine Diseases Impacting Smallholder Farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa
Develop immunologic mathods and tools that will be used to evaluate the T cell mediated immune responses of Holstein cattle
Barlow, John Mastitis Resistance to Enhance Dairy Food Safety
describe pathogen virulence factors, antimicrobial resistance, and molecular epidemiology of Staphylococcus aureus and other Staphylococci in key sectors of the dairy industry in Vermont in order to improve mastitis control practices and food safety.
Barlow, John Determination of Duration of Immunity Conferred by Ad5FMDV Vaccination in Cattle
determine the duration of protection for a new Foot and Mouth Disease Virus vaccine.
Donnelly, Catherine Strategies to detect and mitigate Listeria in artisan cheese facilities
We are conducting research with Vermont artisan cheese producers to mitigate microbiological risks during the manufacture, aging and storage of artisan cheeses
Guo, Mingruo Beneficial and Adverse Effects of Natural Chemicals on Human Health and Food Safety
Formulate and develop safe, effective and economical whey protein based tissue adhesive that could be used in Vermont hospitals, and to evaluate the functional properties of the new adhesives in vitro.
Johnson, Doug Fungal Biofilms and Development of New Anti-Fungal Drugs
Biofilms caused by Candida albicans and other fungi lead to significant losses in the maple syrup industry by blocking/clogging
maple sap plastic tubing. The studies described herein will allow us to examine the ability of biofilm inhibitors to block biofilms on
this type of tubing and other abiotic surfaces.
Kerr, David Genetic and Epigenetic Contribution to Variation between Animals in Strength of Response to Vaccination We are exploring causes for variation that exists between cows in the strength of their response to vaccination with the ultimate goal of reducing the prevalence of poor responder animals.
Kerr, David Mastitis Resistance to Enhance Dairy Food Safety
determine genetic and epigenetic basis for differences between cows in how their cells respond to infection
Kindstedt, Paul Characterization of crystals that enhance the value of artisanal cheeses
Develop an understanding of crystals, their causes, and their impact on quality characteristics of aged cheeses in order to differentiate and add value to artisan cheeses
Neher, Deborah Persistence of Enteric Pathogens in Manure-Amended Soils in Northeast U.S. Produce-Growing Environment
to help inform an important revision of a proposed produce safety rule in the Food Safety Modernization Act.
