Please refer to the Residential Life website for current information about Television in the residence halls:
The UVM Tech Team can register your TV or similar (Apple TV, TiVo, Roku) in the wired Network Registration (netreg) database, but we do not offer support on these devices. We support you, the user, not the hardware, as you navigate using your device on the UVM network. Your TV product information MUST state explicitly that your device can handle WPA2 ENTERPRISE wireless***WPA2 is not sufficient; it must specify WPA2 ENTERPRISE–they are not the same.*** IF your TV will NOT handle WPA2 ENTERPRISE, you MUST use a wired (Ethernet) connection for your TV.
As stated on the page linked above:
- TVs that can connect to your computer may be used to create a larger display for viewing online TV and video content. The store where you buy your TV can tell you if this is possible; and if so, what cable is required for your specific TV and computer.
- If the product information for a smart TV states that your model can connect directly to a “wired” (Ethernet) network, you need to use that documentation to determine how to locate the TV’s MAC address. Then email email@example.com with that MAC address and your UVM NetID. Only devices that connect wirelessly using WPA2 Enterprise encryption standards will work on UVM wireless. Check in the device Menu for WPA2 Enterprise settings; use your UVM NetID and password when prompted.
- General questions can be directed to the UVM Tech Team at 802-656-2604, or visit them on Facebook: www.facebook.com/uvmtechteam.
- To register a TV on the wired network, email firstname.lastname@example.org and include your UVM netid, and the WIRED (Ethernet) MAC address for the TV (consult the TV product documentation to find out how to locate the WIRED MAC ADDRESS. It varies by product).
