Team Initiatives

Follow the Leaf Campaign | Spring 2013

Eco-Reps created an “eco-option” label (shown in the image below) and placed these labels on options such as: used books in the bookstore, local food options in the Marketplace, Real Food options in the dining halls, the "Brights" option on laundry machines in the reshalls and EcoWare in the dining halls and retail locations.

The effort was launched with a video explaining that “following the leaf” on campus was an easy way to make a difference. The campaign and video were inspired by the Rainforest Alliance Follow the Frog campaign and video.

This campaign also included tabling and engaging participants by having them write out their eco-pledges. Eco-Reps also gave away cookies to students who correctly answered questions about being green on campus. Some examples of pledges included:

  • Dry my clothes without a dryer - Yay clotheslines!
  • Use hairspray cans without aerosols
  • Facilitate a child's love for nature
  • Grow all of my greens this summer
  • Buy EcoWare next year

Overall, more than 150 students signed pledges!

Student Sustainability Leaders Symposium | Fall 2017

UVM Eco-Reps helped host and sponsor UVM students to attend the 8th Annual Student Sustainability Leaders Symposium (SSLS) at Champlain College.

This conference was designed specifically for students who are involved in sustainability efforts on their campus. The Annual SSLS is a uniquely tailored opportunity for student sustainability leaders to meet and collaborate with peers from other institutions.

SSLS showcased sustainable conferencing by hosting regional hubs for students residing a long distance from the Philadelphia region, where the main event was held at Swarthmore. The day featured a campus tour, 21 short presentations by students and regional young professionals, a keynote address, and roundtable discussions. All presentations were given at Swarthmore and broadcasted at Champlain College via Zoom video-conferencing.

Passion Projects

Showcasing Sustainability at Admitted Students Day | Spring 2018 | Vicki Giacchino '19

Vicki organized a UVM Sustainable Dining information table to be in the Marketplace on each of the Admitted Students Days. Vicki’s goal was to educate potential new students about the various sustainable dining efforts at UVM, such as EcoWare and the Real Food Challenge. This acted as a resource to get common questions -- such as: Why does UVM not sell bottled water? -- answered. The Sustainability Manager at UVM Dining and Cathy Barrows, manager of the Marketplace, helped make this happen by assisting Vicki with logistics and material collection for the table.

Sustainability Living Mural | Spring 2018 | Kylie Hanley '20

Kylie designed and painted an environmental art piece that was hung in the Sustainability Living Lounge in Harris Millis. The mural that depicts our relationship as students with the environment. Kylie is passionate about art outside of her work and academia, so this project allowed her to bridge her sustainability interests with her creative drive.
