Section Description
Describes the historical development of the United States from the period first European settlement in North America to the end of the Civil War. Topics include the development of slave society, the transformation of Puritan society in New England, the American Revolution, the development of post-revolutionary democracy, the early industrial and market revolutions, the rise of abolitionism, westward expansion, the development of the political argument over slavery in the 1840s and 50s, the crisis leading to Civil War and the situation in the nation at the war's end. We live in a country and society shaped by these events and it is useful to understand them.
