Section Description
A summer Internship at the UVM Morgan Horse Farm will provide students with equine management skills, with specific emphasis on the daily herd management, breeding management, early training, development of horse handling skills, and agritourism. Interns take part in the daily operation of the Morgan Horse Farm from feeding and stall cleaning to stallion semen collection and evaluation. Credits can range from 1-6 credits. Student will select a project topic relevant to the UVM Morgan Horse Farm. The scope of the project will be appropriate for the number of internship credits taken. This is an unpaid internship.
Section Expectation
Students are responsible for transportation to the UVM Morgan Horse Farm in Weybridge, VT. For every credit hour, student is expected to be on site during week days (M-F) for 40 hours over the course of the semester. Morning or afternoon hours can be accommodated based on student schedule. Student is expected to actively participate as part of the UVM Morgan Horse Farm team. Student will communicate weekly with the internship faculty advisor with a written reflection to indicate skills learned and desired areas for development. Over the course of the semester, students will work both on-farm and offsite on their project which will culminate at the end of the semester in a powerpoint presentation.
Evaluation
Students will be evaluated based on attendance (55%), active participation (25%), communication with internship faculty advisor (10%), and internship project (10%). This is a satisfactory/unsatisfactory graded course.
