Section Description

This RSENR core course covers social science theories regarding government, economics, and social movements, and their application to environmental issues. It focuses on US environmental policy and governance from the late 1960s to the present day. Learning objectives and topic areas include: 1) Roles of US executive, legislative, and judicial systems in addressing environmental issues; 2) Interaction about government institutions at different scales, 3) overview of economic theories (e.g. efficiency, supply-demand models, market failure, externalities, ecological & behavioral economics) and tools (e.g. valuation, cost-benefit analysis, present net value, GDP vs GPI) as used in environmental problem analysis and market-based policy approaches; and 3) social movements and civil society engagement in environmental governance.

Section Expectation

This intensive summer course is offered in seminar format. Classes are synchronous in order to build a learning community and facilitate discussion. Compared to the fall and spring semester lecture version, this course is “flipped” in the sense that you will learn the material largely offline. Our time together on Teams will be devoted to students presenting key points from readings and videos and then discussing concepts and their application together. Depending on learning style, this seminar format appeals to many students who find the semester long lecture format more challenging.

Evaluation

Varied activities are used to enhance learning and are graded for evaluation, including attendance, homework, reading reflections, a signature project, leading class discussion, and take home exams for each of 3 units.
