InfoEd's SPIN Database of Funding Opportunities includes:

  • associations and corporations

SPIN offers users three different modes of searching as described below: Text, Advanced and Keywords. The keyword mode is recommended for most searches.

Tips and General Guidelines

  • Make your Preference selections before choosing search terms
  • Save individual opportunities by using either the Email feature or the Bookmark feature found in the full description record.
  • Access and Manage Bookmarked opportunities by navigating to the Bookmarks tab at the top black toolbar
  • Save as many searches as you like and create an alert
  • Access and Manage Saved Searches by Navigating to the Saved Searches tab on the top black toolbar
  • To start a new Text or Advanced Search use the  "Clear" button to remove criteria and start a new search.

Searching SPIN in TEXT Search Mode

Use Text Search Mode to do a simple search using words or short phrases to search the entire text of the SPIN opportunity record.

  1. Login to InfoEd with your UVM NetID and password and navigate to Find Funding at the top of the screen and click on it. At the top black toolbar hover the cursor over the Search tab and make search Text Search is checked.
  2. Before specifying relevant search terms, click on the link to edit filters and make and save selections for various refining criteria.  Once you make these selections they never change in subsequent searches unless you go in an change them.
  3. Enter search term or phrase into the textbox. For easy instructions click on the Help tab for instructional information and video.  The grid below summarizes how you can enter multiple terms.
  4. Click the Locate Funding button to run the search and display results.

Wildcard Scient* Appending an asterisk to a term involkes a wildcard search: searches for records containing "scient' and any suffix
  1. Maximum results per screen may be adjusted at the button where it says 10 - click the drop-down box arrow and make selection.
  2. Quickly browse the short list of titles and sponsors and target possible matches. For those matches, click on the hyperlinked title to access the fully summarized information. From the detailed record use either the email feature on the top black toolbar of the screen or the Bookmark Program button to save and keep track of it.
  3. Close out of the full description record to get back to the search results.
  4. To save your search criteria to run later or turn into an alert click the Save button to name it and turn it on as an alert.

Searching SPIN in ADVANCED Search Mode

Use the Advanced Search Mode to search on specific fields of the SPIN program record.

  1. If you have not already done so,  Log into InfoEd with your UVM NetID and password and navigate to Find Funding at the top of the screen and click on it.  At the top black toolbar, hover the cursor over the Search tab and make sure that ADVANCED Search is checked.
  2. Before specifying relevant search terms, click on the link to edit filters (same as preferences at the top) and make selections. You only have to make these selections once.  After the first time, they are saved for all subsequent searches and will only change if you go in and modify them.
  3. The default field to search on is Full Program and that will allow you to search on all the fields in a program record; identical to doing a search in Basic Search Mode.  If you want to search on a specific field in the program record, use the Full Program down down arrow to to open up a drop-down list of all available fields. Select the field you wish to search on and supply and make a choice in the Contains box and then supply in the free text box, the term or phrase you want to search on.
  4. If you wish to search on more than one field or term, use the Add New button to add each additional new field and/or related search term.
  5. After adding all desired terms, click on the Locate Funding button to run search and return results.

  7. Quickly browse the short list of titles and sponsors and target possible matches.  For those you deem to be a possible match, click on the hyperlinked title to access the fully summarized information. Once the full record opens, use either the email feature at the top or the Bookmark feature on the right to keep track of the opportunity.
  8. Close out of the full description record to get back to the search results.
  9. To save your search criteria to run later or turn into an alert click the Save button to name it and turn it on as an alert.

Searching SPIN with KEYWORDS

Instructions for searching SPIN using keywords follow here. Recommended for most searches.

  1. If you have not already done so, Log into InfoEd with your UVM NetID and password and navigate to Find Funding at the top of the screen and click on it.  At the top black toolbar, hover the cursor over the Search tab and make sure that InfoEd Keyword Search is checked.
  2. If you have not previously made choices for your filters, navigate to "click here to edit them" and make your selections for Applicant type, Citizenship, Activity Location and others. Once you make these selections they are saved for all subsequent searches and you will not have to make those choices again unless you want to go in and change them.
  3. To make keyword selections click on the blue hyperlink "Select Keywords" which opens up a screen with two tabs for methods of choosing keywords.  For browsing through the keyword heirarchy use the Explorer tab.  For seaching for a specific keyword use the Searcher tab.  When using Searcher tab, type in your term and then click on the Show Subset button and make your selections by using the  "Choose the Keywords" check boxes. When using the Explorer Tab choose from the Category 1 major topical keywords to open up subtopics in Category 2 and choose subtopics in Category 2 to open up further subtopics in Category 3. To add your selections into your search criteria for each Category, you need to use the Choose Keywords check boxes to add them before going on to the subtopics in subsequent Categories. To get back to just the Category 1 Major topical keywords, click on the the word Category 1.   4. To delete a keyword click on it. You can use a combination of both methods to select keywords in a single search.
  5. After selecting your keywords, click  "Save Selections and Continue".
  6. To run the search click on "Locate Funding"
  7. Quickly browse the short list of titles and sponsors and target possible matches.  For those you deem as possible matches, click on the hyperlinked title to access the fully summarized information. Once the full description record opens there is an opportunity at the top black toolbar to email to yourself any matches you wish to save or you can use the bookmark feature in the upper right hand corner.
  8. Close out of the full description record to get back to the search results.
  9. To save your search criteria to run later or turn into an alert click the Save hyperlink to name it and turn it on as an alert.
