<\/i>Location:\u00a0<\/b>3 College St, Burlington, VT (on the south side of the Rubenstein Ecosystem Sciences\/ECHO building). Please note that parking there requires an hourly payment.<\/p>\n

<\/i>Cost:<\/strong> $30 for municipal leaders; free for road foremen<\/p>\n

Lake Champlain Sea Grant is hosting a\u00a0<\/span>un<\/span>ique trip aboard the R\/V Marcelle\u00a0<\/span>Melosira<\/span>\u00a0for municipal staff and board members. The trip is designed to bring together mu<\/span>nicipal road\u00a0<\/span>foremen<\/span>\u00a0and crews with\u00a0<\/span>selectboard<\/span>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0conservation commission<\/span>\u00a0members<\/span>\u00a0and other\u00a0<\/span>community leaders\u00a0<\/span>for an ex<\/span>change\u00a0<\/span>of\u00a0<\/span>knowledge<\/span>\u00a0related to sustainable winter road salting practices.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>We will a<\/span>lso\u00a0<\/span>talk<\/span>\u00a0about water qual<\/span>ity and how<\/span>\u00a0road salt\u00a0<\/span>can impact\u00a0<\/span>life in streams and lake<\/span>s.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Each participant\u00a0<\/span>is\u00a0<\/span>encouraged to bring along a\u00a0<\/span>sample of wa<\/span>ter from a local stream<\/span>, pond,\u00a0<\/span>or lake<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0near where they live.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>During the\u00a0<\/span>excursion on Lake Champlain, e<\/span>ach person will\u00a0<\/span>test\u00a0<\/span>th<\/span>eir<\/span>\u00a0water sample to assess its\u00a0<\/span>elect<\/span>rical\u00a0<\/span>conductivity<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>This\u00a0<\/span>can\u00a0<\/span>be<\/span>\u00a0used to estimate\u00a0<\/span>how much\u00a0<\/span>chlo<\/span>ride\u00a0<\/span>is\u00a0<\/span>in the water,\u00a0<\/span>much of which\u00a0<\/span>comes from<\/span> road salt spread in the winter months<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Participants wi<\/span>ll als<\/span>o\u00a0<\/span>sample from Lake Champlain a<\/span>nd\u00a0<\/span>measure its\u00a0<\/span>electrical conductivity,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and will<\/span>\u00a0have the option to\u00a0<\/span>collect<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>zooplankton (<\/span>tiny organisms\u00a0<\/span>that live suspe<\/span>nded in the water)<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Registration <\/span>is on a first-come, first-served<\/span>\u00a0basis<\/span>. All participants must be in close-toed shoes to board the boat.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
