Residents of Lake Champlain Basin who are new to\u00a0winter often face significant challenges in adapting to winter environments, with impacts on social integration, economic participation, and health outcomes such as seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Lake\u00a0Champlain\u00a0being a keystone landscape of the\u00a0area\u00a0plays\u00a0a central role\u00a0in\u00a0local\u00a0residents\u2019\u00a0sense of place, identity, and engagements with the landscape, and adapting to Lake\u00a0Champlain\u2019s winter is fundamental to building these aspects of their lives in Vermont.\u00a0\u00a0Unlike long-term residents or people who have previously experienced winter, the winter novices often lack generational knowledge, cultural familiarity, and social networks that\u00a0facilitate\u00a0resilience and\u00a0adaptation\u00a0to winter.\u00a0This research addresses these gaps by exploring how\u00a0perceptions, cultural connections, and winter-related experiences shape belonging and well-being. Findings will inform policy, public health strategies, and community-based interventions that enhance resilience and equity in the region.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
