{"id":892,"date":"2023-07-03T08:47:38","date_gmt":"2023-07-03T12:47:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.seagrant.w3.uvm.edu\/2023\/07\/03\/call-for-northern-forest-research-proposals-includes-water-topics\/"},"modified":"2025-10-22T17:49:06","modified_gmt":"2025-10-22T21:49:06","slug":"call-for-northern-forest-research-proposals-includes-water-topics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/seagrant\/2023\/07\/03\/call-for-northern-forest-research-proposals-includes-water-topics\/","title":{"rendered":"Call for Northern Forest Research Proposals Includes Water Topics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n\tThe <a href=\"https:\/\/nsrcforest.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Northeastern States Research Cooperative (NSRC)<\/a>\u00a0is pleased to announce a\u00a02023 Request for Proposals.\u00a0The\u00a0research competition aims to put science to work across the Northern Forest in support of a vibrant and thriving economy and culture, rooted in forest health.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe NSRC team\u00a0expects\u00a0to award nearly $5.5 million in funding for\u00a0research\u00a0projects\u00a0that\u00a0can\u00a0begin in spring, summer, or fall\u00a02024. Research projects may range from small seed grants to three-year projects, and\u00a0budgets\u00a0may\u00a0range\u00a0from $75,000 to $500,000. NSRC expects to fund between 15 and 25 projects in response to this RFP.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tLetters of\u00a0intent\u00a0are\u00a0due <strong>August 28, 2023<\/strong>, and full proposals\u00a0are\u00a0due <strong>September 26, 2023<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tPriority issues\u00a0related to water\u00a0are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\tLand use, sustainable forestry, and forest fragmentation, including water quality impacts from forest management strategies, changes in land use, sustainable forestry, and forest fragmentation.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tRecreation and tourism, including the \u201ccarrying capacity\u201d of lands and waters.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tEnvironmental justice, equity, and inclusion, including matters of equity, consideration about who pays for and who benefits from ecosystem services, including air and water quality.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\t\u201cThis research competition has great potential to benefit the Northern Forest, its waters,\u00a0and its communities,\u00a0by building knowledge and research capacity in the region. We are grateful for the support from Congress and the United States Department of Agriculture for\u00a0the funding that makes this program possible.\u201d said Anne Jefferson, Professor and NSRC\u00a0and Lake Champlain Sea Grant\u00a0Director at the University of Vermont. \u201cWe invite researchers\u00a0across disciplines and sectors to\u00a0consider applying and to contact us if they have questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tInformed by\u00a0NSRC\u2019s\u00a0external advisory committee, proposals\u00a0should\u00a0address the state of the forest, measuring and quantifying impacts, developing tools for response, and\/or rural community and economic development. Proposals are welcome from\u00a0scientists\u00a0at all career stages, resource managers, policy-makers, and others pursuing research relevant to forest lands in the northern tier of New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Participation by USDA Forest Service (USFS) personnel in projects is encouraged. NSRC encourages proposals that are led by and\/or are relevant to Tribal Nations and Indigenous communities in the region and that have regional applicability.
