September is also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ready.gov\/stand-ready\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.ready.gov\/stand-ready\">National Preparedness Month<\/a>. Although emergencies and natural disasters can happen at any time of year, now is as good a time as any to think about how well you are prepared for the unexpected.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the Lake Champlain basin, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/seagrant\/flooding-in-lake-champlain-basin\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"3618\">flooding<\/a> is the most common and costly natural hazard. As extreme precipitation events become more common, there are some basic steps you can take to be better prepared for future flooding. Notifications can be tailored to specific locations and types of alerts you would like to receive.\u00a0Sign up for <a href=\"https:\/\/vem.vermont.gov\/vtalert\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VT-ALERT<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/alert.ny.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NY-ALERT<\/a> by visiting the respective webpages.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>National Weather Service<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">weather.gov<\/a>) issues weather alerts and weather forecasts. Search for your town to get the latest forecast.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The United States has a network of <strong>river gauges<\/strong> that provide information on current and forecasted water levels, which can be found at <a href=\"https:\/\/water.noaa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/water.noaa.gov\/<\/a>. The circles and squares represent locations where there is an official NWS gauge. The color of the circle represents current conditions, and the color of the squares represents the water level forecast.\u00a0If you live along or near a river, check whether there is a river gauge near you. Can you stay with someone you know? What about any pets?&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Where are emergency shelters in your community?&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do you know the best roads to take that likely won\u2019t be affected by flooding or washouts?&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What will you bring? This water can be used for drinking, washing, and cleaning the toilet.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Gather your emergency supplies and stay tuned to local radio or television stations for updates.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Before a storm arrives, fill up your gas tank or fully charge your electric vehicle to prepare for potential evacuation.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If possible, relocate vehicles to higher ground.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lake Champlain Sea Grant will be sharing other helpful tips throughout the month of September on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/lakechamplainseagrant\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/lakechamplainseagrant\/\">our Instagram<\/a>.
