From hands-on events to community boat trips&nbsp;to&nbsp;summer camps, teacher&nbsp;trainings,&nbsp;beach cleanups,&nbsp;and&nbsp;outreach&nbsp;and volunteer monitoring&nbsp;on Vermont\u2019s inland lakes and ponds, there is plenty to explore.&nbsp;Read along to learn more about what we have planned for the summer of 2026.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">For the Public<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Public Boat Trips<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns are-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"686\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/seagrant\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/RV-Marcelle-1024x686.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1528\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/seagrant\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/RV-Marcelle-1024x686.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/seagrant\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/RV-Marcelle-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/seagrant\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/RV-Marcelle-768x514.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/seagrant\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/RV-Marcelle.jpg 1295w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All aboard!&nbsp;This summer, the Lake Champlain Sea Grant team will be offering&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/seagrant\/public-boat-trips-on-lake-champlain-aboard-the-r-v-marcelle-melosira\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">public boat trips<\/a>&nbsp;aboard the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/seagrant\/2023\/08\/01\/a-new-vessel-to-support-lake-champlain-sea-grant-education-and-outreach-efforts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>R\/V Marcelle Melosira<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;in both New York and Vermont. Typically&nbsp;docked at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/rsenr\/rubensteinlab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University of Vermont\u2019s Rubenstein Laboratory,<\/a>&nbsp;the&nbsp;vessel supports&nbsp;fisheries&nbsp;and&nbsp;water resources research, as well as educational programming&nbsp;by the&nbsp;LCSG staff and our Watershed Alliance&nbsp;team.&nbsp;Over the summer,&nbsp;a limited number of trips open to the public and offer&nbsp;community members the opportunity to experience the ship and talk to the crew and staff while learning about Lake Champlain.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<em>Lake Champlain Live<\/em>&nbsp;experience will provide participants with an opportunity to step into the role of&nbsp;limnologists (i.e., those who study inland waters). Following an interactive introduction to the geology and formation of the Lake Champlain basin and the lake, participants will learn about biological, chemical, and physical measurements limnologists make to improve our understanding of the lake, its watershed, and our impacts on them. The&nbsp;crowd is just as varied,&nbsp;from groups of friends on their way to local wineries, to&nbsp;buddies&nbsp;on a bike trip around the lake, to families enjoying time together.&nbsp;No matter the mix,&nbsp;the atmosphere is&nbsp;relaxed and full of joy.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Community Cleanups<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looking for a way to get involved this summer? Join the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/seagrant\/lake-champlain-basin-marine-debris-coalition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lake Champlain Marine Debris Coalition<\/a>&nbsp;for various community cleanups&nbsp;across the basin.&nbsp;The Coalition brings together organizations and communities with a shared commitment to reduce marine debris and improve the health of our local waters.&nbsp;Visit&nbsp;our&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/seagrant\/lake-champlain-basin-marine-debris-coalition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">website<\/a>&nbsp;to&nbsp;stay up to date on upcoming events.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Flood Preparedness Workshop<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looking to learn about how to prepare for future flooding and strategies you can take at home to prevent damage from flooding? LCSG will be offering a workshop that will cover where to access emergency alerts, practical steps for preventing flood damage, and safe cleanup practices to prevent mold growth after a flood. We will also discuss the science behind flooding and drought in our region and how we can plan to adapt to future conditions. More information is available <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/seagrant\/event\/flood-preparedness-workshop\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/seagrant\/event\/flood-preparedness-workshop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">For Teachers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Watershed Alliance Activities<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;Watershed Alliance will also lead two educator professional development courses this summer, the Watershed Alliance Teacher Researcher Partnership (WATR) and&nbsp;Watershed for Every Classroom (WEC).&nbsp;Although registration&nbsp;has closed for both opportunities, we invite you to join in on the adventure by following along through our newsletter and Instagram.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/seagrant\/education\/teacher-professional-learning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Learn more about these opportunities on the LCSG Teacher Professional Development webpage.<\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/seagrant\/teacher-professional-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The WATR Partnership<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;leverages local research activities and a state-of-the-art research vessel to provide teachers with a week-long summer field experience exploring watershed science and water quality issues.&nbsp;The <em>R\/V Marcelle Melosira<\/em> is the primary research vessel at the University of Vermont, and during WATR, the vessel functions as a floating laboratory and classroom on Lake Champlain. This immersive experience allows teachers to gain valuable experience working alongside research faculty, staff, crew, and community partners to reimagine teaching rooted in place. Through the WATR Partnership, teachers will learn about current and emerging water quality challenges and will become involved in exciting, ongoing research projects! Participation is open to stormwater practitioners, with registration on a&nbsp;first-come, first-served&nbsp;basis. More information&nbsp;can be&nbsp;found&nbsp;on&nbsp;our&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/seagrant\/event\/williston-stormwater-infrastructure-site-visit-day-new-implementation-lessons-learned-and-innovative-solutions\/\" data-type=\"tribe_events\" data-id=\"4036\">webpage<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Road Salt-focused&nbsp;Education&nbsp;Trip on Lake Champlain&nbsp;for&nbsp;Municipal Staff and&nbsp;Local Leaders&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On\u00a0July\u00a015,\u00a0LCSG is hosting a\u00a0road salt-focused\u00a0trip on Lake Champlain aboard the\u00a0<em>R\/V Marcelle\u00a0Melosira.<\/em>\u00a0The trip is designed to bring together municipal\u00a0highway supervisors\u00a0and crews with\u00a0selectboards, conservation commission\u00a0members, and other\u00a0local\u00a0leaders\u00a0for an exchange\u00a0of\u00a0knowledge\u00a0related to sustainable winter road salting practices and water quality. Each participant\u00a0is\u00a0encouraged to\u00a0bring along\u00a0a\u00a0sample of water from a\u00a0stream, pond,\u00a0or lake\u00a0near where they live\u00a0for testing.\u00a0Registration\u00a0is on a first-come, first-served basis.\u00a0More information can be found on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/seagrant\/event\/road-salt-focused-education-trip-on-lake-champlain-for-municipal-staff-and-local-leaders\/\"><u>our website<\/u><\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Cyanobacteria-focused&nbsp;Education&nbsp;Trip on Lake Champlain for&nbsp;Science Writers and Media&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another unique&nbsp;trip aboard the R\/V Marcelle&nbsp;Melosira&nbsp;will be offered&nbsp;for&nbsp;science writers and&nbsp;media from across the Lake Champlain basin&nbsp;on&nbsp;July 7&nbsp;from 10:00&nbsp;AM&nbsp;to noon. This&nbsp;trip on Lake Champlain will focus on&nbsp;cyanobacteria blooms&nbsp;and&nbsp;will&nbsp;include short presentations by&nbsp;several leading&nbsp;researchers in the Lake Champlain&nbsp;basin&nbsp;about the status of&nbsp;cyanobacteria blooms&nbsp;in the lake&nbsp;and other waterbodies&nbsp;in the Basin.&nbsp;There will be an opportunity for the&nbsp;trip participants to&nbsp;engage in one-on-one interviews with the&nbsp;researchers&nbsp;and&nbsp;a hands-on&nbsp;activity\/demonstration&nbsp;(challenge by choice)&nbsp;to&nbsp;sample&nbsp;the lake water&nbsp;and&nbsp;see&nbsp;some of the cyanobacteria&nbsp;up close through&nbsp;microscopes&nbsp;connected to a large&nbsp;screen display&nbsp;in the&nbsp;classroom aboard the&nbsp;R\/V.&nbsp;More information can be found on&nbsp;our&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/seagrant\/event\/cyanobacteria-science-writers\/\" data-type=\"tribe_events\" data-id=\"4056\">website<\/a>. The Sea Grant Scholars program brings this to life.&nbsp;Late this&nbsp;summer, a cohort of four&nbsp;scholars&nbsp;will&nbsp;take part in a&nbsp;professional development workshop&nbsp;designed to deepen their understanding of Lake Champlain Sea Grant\u2019s work and impact. Through a series of tours, trainings, and collaborative activities, participants will explore the values of Sea Grant while building skills and connections to support their future careers.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We hope to see you at the lake this summer.
