{"id":1026,"date":"2020-10-22T08:30:01","date_gmt":"2020-10-22T12:30:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.seagrant.w3.uvm.edu\/2020\/10\/22\/stormwater-consults-free-to-lake-champlain-basin-residents\/"},"modified":"2025-10-22T17:49:19","modified_gmt":"2025-10-22T21:49:19","slug":"stormwater-consults-free-to-lake-champlain-basin-residents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/seagrant\/2020\/10\/22\/stormwater-consults-free-to-lake-champlain-basin-residents\/","title":{"rendered":"Stormwater Consults Free to Lake Champlain Basin Residents"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n\tControlling stormwater runoff before it leaves your property and enters a lake or stream can make a huge difference in\u00a0reducing flooding or erosion,\u00a0protecting water quality, and preventing\u00a0toxic\u00a0cyanobacteria\u00a0(blue-green algae) blooms\u00a0that close swimming beaches.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIf you live in the\u00a0Lake Champlain basin, you can sign up for a\u00a0stormwater consultation through the BLUE stormwater mitigation program. The evaluations are free, courtesy of the\u00a0Lake Champlain Sea Grant program. Rebates of up to $200 are available for residents of Williston and\u00a0up to $300 for\u00a0Colchester residents\u00a0for work completed by December 31, 2020.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tEvaluators will work with eligible property owners to\u00a0provide information on good stewardship to protect waterways and help identify opportunities for implementing green stormwater infrastructure practices.\u00a0These include gutter systems, infiltration systems, vegetative swales, rain gardens, permeable paving, and rain barrels, among other options.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tStormwater runoff occurs when rain and snowmelt don&#8217;t\u00a0soak into the ground but instead flow over impervious surfaces such as driveways and paved streets. If not controlled, runoff may accumulate debris, fertilizers, pet waste, sediment, or other pollutants that could adversely impact nearby waterways.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<a href=\"http:\/\/go.uvm.edu\/lcsg-blue\">Learn more about BLUE\u00a0or\u00a0schedule a consultation.<\/a>\u00a0To determine if you reside in one of the 12 watersheds in the Lake Champlain basin, <a href=\"http:\/\/go.uvm.edu\/lc-watersheds\">view this map of Lake Champlain&#8217;s watersheds.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\tLake Champlain Sea Grant is hosted by the University of Vermont (UVM) in partnership with the State University of New York Plattsburgh.
