{"id":733,"date":"2025-10-03T11:16:53","date_gmt":"2025-10-03T15:16:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.seagrant.w3.uvm.edu\/?page_id=733"},"modified":"2026-04-20T12:06:33","modified_gmt":"2026-04-20T16:06:33","slug":"green-schools-initiative","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/seagrant\/green-schools-initiative\/","title":{"rendered":"Green Schools Initiative"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Lake Champlain Sea Grant&nbsp;is partnering&nbsp;with the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation and Greenprint&nbsp;Partners on the Green Schools Initiative. Lake Champlain Sea Grant will provide stormwater education and outreach to school communities including watershed and stormwater curricula as well as training for students,&nbsp;teachers, and local watershed partners. In addition, Lake Champlain Sea Grant will help schools identify ways to maximize the additional benefits of green stormwater projects, such as creating pollinator habitat and outdoor classrooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is stormwater?<\/strong>&nbsp;Stormwater is water from rainfall and melting snow or ice that moves over the land and collects&nbsp;pollutants as it makes its way to lakes, ponds, streams, and other surface waters. In urban areas, stormwater reaches surface waters more quickly and in larger volumes during and immediately following rain events than it does in natural areas. This is due to the many impervious surfaces in urban&nbsp;areas that prevent stormwater from infiltrating into the ground. Conversely, in natural areas, stormwater can more easily soak into the ground. It then makes its way slowly through the ground, recharging surface waters from beneath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why does stormwater matter?&nbsp;<\/strong>The health of Lake Champlain and other water bodies in the Lake Champlain basin, which lies within portions of Vermont, New York, and Quebec, is negatively impacted by nonpoint sources (not from one single source) of pollution. Pollutants can include&nbsp;phosphorus, nitrogen, sediments, chloride, and bacteria, which are all carried to water bodies in stormwater runoff. Thus, it is critical that everyone understand what stormwater is&nbsp;and how to help clean it and reduce its volume before it enters local waterways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is the Green Schools Initiative?\u00a0<\/strong>The Green Schools Initiative aims to\u00a0reduce stormwater runoff and pollution entering Lake Champlain via public school grounds and offers funding and technical assistance to help public schools and state colleges meet the Three-Acre General Permit stormwater regulation.\u00a0Learn if your school makes the list,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/5b1490f731d4dfc24eb042a8\/t\/60e8bbb0eebddd6e48ec9d23\/1625865136734\/Vermont+3+Acre+Rule+Schools+by+School+District.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Schools Affected by Vermont Three-Acre Rule<\/a>.
