This includes such things as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uvm.edu\/seagrant\/resource\/sustainable-road-salting-practices-measuring-pavement-temperature\/\" data-type=\"resource\" data-id=\"1803\">monitoring pavement temperatures<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/seagrant\/resources\/sustainable-road-salting-practices-adjusting-salt-used\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;<\/a>and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uvm.edu\/seagrant\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Adjusting_Salt_Based_Conditions_2025_10_12.pdf\" data-type=\"attachment\" data-id=\"1810\">adjusting salt accordingly<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uvm.edu\/seagrant\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Calibration_2025_10_12.pdf\" data-type=\"attachment\" data-id=\"1806\">calibrating equipment<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uvm.edu\/seagrant\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Segmented_Plows_2025_10_12.pdf\" data-type=\"attachment\" data-id=\"1798\">using segmented&nbsp;and secondary plows<\/a>, and using a salt-water mixture (brine) to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uvm.edu\/seagrant\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Pre-wetting_2025_10_12.pdf\" data-type=\"attachment\" data-id=\"1802\">pre-wet salt at the spinner<\/a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uvm.edu\/seagrant\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Brine_2025_10_13.pdf\" data-type=\"attachment\" data-id=\"1808\">as a liquid on paved surfaces<\/a>. Other sustainable salt practices include&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uvm.edu\/seagrant\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/RWIS_2025_10_14.pdf\" data-type=\"attachment\" data-id=\"1800\">using RWIS<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uvm.edu\/seagrant\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Tracking_Salt_2025_10_12.pdf\" data-type=\"attachment\" data-id=\"1796\">tracking salt use.<\/a> Lake Champlain Sea Grant developed a table to describe a variety of options municipalities might consider, with pros and cons for the environment, costs, liability and service described.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/seagrant\/sites\/default\/files\/uploads\/Sustainable_Salt_Practices_Municipalities_2024.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">You can access that table here.<\/a>&nbsp;In addition, Lake Champlain Sea Grant partnered with several Vermont communities to develop&nbsp;short videos we hope will help winter maintenance professionals understand such techniques. Those follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Equipment Calibration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How-Tos&nbsp;for Municipal Trucks<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When municipal salting equipment is new, an initial one-time calibration process is required. The process is described by Dan Guillmette with the City of South Burlington, Vermont, in this three-and-a-half-minute video.&nbsp;This video also includes instructions for doing an annual catch or drop test to calibrate the salt spreaders on the trucks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Municipal Salt Truck Calibration\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/C9sWM7WN95E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Each year, salt trucks should be calibrated using a drop or catch test. This 2-minute video made in partnership with the communities of South Burlington and Milton, Vermont, explains how to do this. Thanks to employees with both communities and Vince Franke with Peregrine Productions for creating these videos for us!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"How To Calibrate Your Salt Truck\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Lj_L-cayDrw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Monitoring Pavement Temperatures and Using Brine to Pre-wet Salt<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Between 2020 and 2023, the community of Hyde Park, Vermont, cut its road salt use by almost 50% by using a suite of best practices. They calibrate&nbsp;equipment,&nbsp;measure air and pavement temperatures, and make&nbsp;a salt water mixture (called brine), which they use to pre-wet dry salt at the spinner on their trucks. This help to prevent the salt from bouncing off of the pavement, keeping it in place where it is meant to do the work rather than negatively impacting road side vegetation or running into local waterways without helping to reduce ice on roads. Pre-wetting the salt just before it is applied to the road also allows it to start working immediately, as rock salt must be wet to work its magic to lower the freezing point of water and minimize ice formation on roads and other surfaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"How to make and use salt brine\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/s-LZYeMI7Xg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Calculators<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Deicing Product Application Calculator<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>New Hampshire&#8217;s Green SnowPro program\u00a0is a limited liability program in which commercial businesses and municipal staff can participate to reduce use of salt and ensure surfaces are safe during winter storms. This program provides guidance on the amount of deicing products to use and actions to take to maintain parking lots and roads under varied winter conditions. We worked with a programmer to translate their guidance into an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uvm.edu\/seagrant\/deicing-product-application-rate-calculator\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"3308\">online deicing product application\u00a0calculator<\/a>. You might consider saving this as a bookmark on your smartphone (as if it were an app) for easy access.
