SUMMARY:Potentially Polluting Shipwrecks in the Great Lakes
DESCRIPTION:In 2013\, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) published its comprehensive “Risk Assessment for Potentially Polluting Wrecks in U.S. Waters\,” which identified five potentially polluting shipwrecks in the Great Lakes. One of these five shipwrecks\, the tank barge Argo that sank in 1937 in Lake Erie\, loaded with a toxic high-benzene cargo\, was found to be leaking soon after its discovery in 2015.\nThis webinar will discuss the multi-agency response to the leaking tank barge Argo and the challenges responders faced in successfully removing the pollution threat and protecting public safety. The four remaining potentially polluting wrecks identified in NOAA’s report will also be discussed\, including the freighter Prins Willem V at a depth of about 75-feet off the coast of Milwaukee and the freighter Material Service at a depth of about 35-feet off Calumet Harbor in Lake Michigan; the freighter Monrovia at a depth of about 140-feet off Thunder Bay in Lake Huron; and the Edmund Fitzgerald at a depth of about 530-feet off Whitefish Bay in Lake Superior. There is parking available on the left\, right before the water. \nAudience: Contractors and natural resource practitioners \nJoin the Northwoods Stewardship Center\, Franklin Watershed Committee\, VT DEC Lakes and Ponds\, the Lake Champlain Basin Program\, and Lake Champlain Sea Grant for an upcoming Small BMP Installation Training where you will learn how to design and build an open-top culvert\, then actually install two open-top culverts in a driveway where they are recommended through a Lake Wise assessment. Please note that parking there requires an hourly payment. \nCost: $30 for municipal leaders; free for road foremen \nLake Champlain Sea Grant is hosting a unique trip aboard the R/V Marcelle Melosira for municipal staff and board members. The trip is designed to bring together municipal road foremen and crews with selectboard and conservation commission members and other community leaders for an exchange of knowledge related to sustainable winter road salting practices. We will also talk about water quality and how road salt can impact life in streams and lakes.  \nEach participant is encouraged to bring along a sample of water from a local stream\, pond\, or lake near where they live. During the excursion on Lake Champlain\, each person will test their water sample to assess its electrical conductivity. This can be used to estimate how much chloride is in the water\, much of which comes from road salt spread in the winter months. Participants will also sample from Lake Champlain and measure its electrical conductivity\, and will have the option to collect zooplankton (tiny organisms that live suspended in the water).  \nRegistration is on a first-come\, first-served basis. We will meet with stormwater managers and designers for this event to view several stormwater management practices and discuss maintenance considerations and lessons learned. The projects include: \n-Gravel wetland completed in Fall 2025 \n-In progress gravel wetland installation (planned) \n-Stormwater ponds in residential neighborhoods \n-Infiltration basins \nParticipation is open to any interested stormwater practitioners\, such as designers\, maintenance professionals\, engineers\, agency staff\, contractors\, project managers\, municipal staff\, and students. SUMMARY:Lake Champlain Environmental Sensitivity Index Mapping
DESCRIPTION:Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) maps provide a concise summary of coastal resources that face potential risk in the event of an oil or chemical spill nearby. Incident response managers use these maps from a wide range of federal and state agencies to identify vulnerable coastal locations and guide decision-making about where and how to prioritize emergency response and restoration activities. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has established guidance and developed a portal for publishing nationally consistent ESI maps. The Lake Champlain Basin Program\, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency\, and U.S. Geological Survey recognize the need to create these maps for the 587 miles of Lake Champlain shoreline so that protection priorities and response strategies can be identified\, allowing rapid response in the case of an oil or chemical spill. Each presentation will be recorded and made available on our website after the event. \n9/21 (Remote via Teams) – Scott George \, Status of Round Goby in Eastern North America: Implications for Lake Champlain. Join online here. \nScott George is a biologist in the Watersheds Research Section of the USGS New York Water Science Center in Troy\, NY. He completed a master’s degree at the State University at Albany (SUNY) in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology on the impact of severe flooding on lotic biota. Scott’s current research is aimed at better understanding riverine fish\, benthic macroinvertebrate\, and periphyton communities and the disturbances that impact them. Specific ongoing projects include monitoring the expansion of Round Goby towards the Hudson River using environmental DNA and other methods\, studying the recovery of fish assemblages in acid-impacted Catskill Mountain streams\, and evaluating the toxicity of sediments to benthic macroinvertebrates in Great Lakes Areas of Concern.

Each presentation will be recorded and made available on our website after the event. \n10/5 (Hybrid: Teams/Davis Center Room 413) - Julie Dragon\, Transmissible Cancer Discovered in Catfish in Vermont’s Lakes. Join online here. \nJulie Dragon is an Associate Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics\, and is Director of the Bioinformatics Core in the Larner College of Medicine and Director of the Data Science Core for the Vermont Biomedical Research Network. Her work centers on the use of large genomics data sets to address evolutionary\, environmental\, and biomedical questions. Dr. Dragon is committed to leveraging genomics data to address many issues impacting our planet and lives. She has a Ph.D. in Plant Biology from UVM\, where she studied the evolution of an arctic-subarctic section of marsh sedges with Dr. David Barrington. \n

Each presentation will be recorded and made available on our website after the event. \n10/19 (Remote via Teams) - Rodrigo Soares \, Bridging the Gaps of Vermont’s Emergency Response Capacity. Join online here.  \nRodrigo Soares is a postdoctoral associate in the UVM Plant and Soil Science Department. He earned his PhD in strategic communication and a masters in mass communication from the University of Central Florida (UCF). Soares has 15 years of experience as a leading practitioner in the communication field\, and seven years of applied research in risk and crisis communication. His work has analyzed disease outbreaks and pandemics such as the Zika virus in Brazil and COVID19\, through a message design perspective. He also tested the adequacy of crisis communication theories in explaining the failures of institutions facing repeated crises\, expanding the understanding of post-crisis learning. His research provides both theoretical advancements and practical applications to the field of risk and crisis communication.

His research focuses on the application of microbiomes to protect the natural environment and public health. His currently focuses on the management of organic wastes with the goal of harnessing reactor microbiomes to convert renewable feedstocks to valuable products and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from landfills with soil microbiomes. Dr. Scarborough earned his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin – Madison\, where he worked as part of the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center.

Each presentation will be recorded and made available on our website after the event. \n11/16 (Hybrid: Teams/Davis Center Room 413) - Adebukola Aborigho\, Assessing the Impact of Impaired Lakes on Zooplankton Community Responses to Salt Stress. Join online here.   \nAdebukola is pursuing a PhD in Aquatic Ecology from the Rubenstein School of Environment at the University of Vermont\, and conducts research in the Rubenstein Ecosystem Science Laboratory. Her research is focused on studying the effects of multiple stressors on the structure and function of freshwater invertebrates (specifically Zooplankton). Adebukola received her BSc. in Animal and Environmental Biology from the University of Benin\, Nigeria in 2012. She also holds an MSc. in Environmental Toxicology and Pollution Management from the University of Lagos\, Nigeria.
