The Radiation Safety Office (RSO), oversees the use of ionizing radiation sources and class 3B and 4 lasers and lasers systems on campus and ensures compliance with state and federal regulations, to protect UVM employees, students, the public, and the environment. The RSO also provides safety related services for UVM. There are more than 350 faculty, staff, and students using radioactive materials and  ionizing radiation producing devices for research and educational purposes in more than 100 labs in 14 buildings.

Radiation Emergency Response

Any radiation emergency, either actual or suspected, must be reported to the Radiation Safety Office (RSO) as soon as possible.

If the radiation emergency occurs during normal working hours, Monday thru Friday, 8:00 - 12:00, 1:00 - 4:30, call the RSO at 656-2570.

After normal working hours or on weekends or holidays, call 911 and UVM Police Services will be notified. The UVM police dispatcher will then notify the RSO personnel according to a priority list.

Non-emergencies after normal working hours or on weekends or holidays, please call UVM Police Service at 656-3473.
