I look forward to engaging with students, faculty, and staff, as well as leaders across all sectors in Vermont and beyond, as we collectively seek to build on the success the university has achieved.

-Suresh Garimella, UVM's 27th President

I am excited to begin my tenure as president of one of our nation’s most historic and respected public universities. From its home overlooking Lake Champlain in beautiful Burlington, Vermont—one of the most vibrant college towns in America—UVM’s world-class teacher-scholars and their students explore societal challenges that cross disciplinary boundaries in the humanities and the sciences to find solutions addressing many urgent 21st-century needs.

As Vermont’s land-grant institution and its only research university, the University of Vermont plays a central role in sustaining the quality of life for communities across Vermont. As envisioned in the Land-Grant College Act—proposed by Vermont Senator Justin Morrill in 1862, and just as important today—UVM offers higher learning opportunities to students of all backgrounds, engages in innovative research and creative endeavor, and moves discoveries from laboratory to market to stimulate economic growth and support the public good.

Importantly, UVM’s impact is not limited to the state of Vermont. In today’s global economy, the boundaries of the American research university truly span the globe. Our students seek to make positive change locally and around the world. Engaged research and learning opportunities offer them the means for merging theory and practice, to make a tangible impact as they shape their futures.

I look forward to engaging with students, faculty, and staff, as well as leaders across all sectors in Vermont and beyond, as we collectively seek to build on the success the university has achieved. Together we will identify and pursue the strategies that will propel UVM into the next decade, expand its impact, and continue to ensure access to UVM’s learning, discovery, and engagement endeavors.

I invite you to learn more about UVM through these pages. Even better, please visit our campus in the near future—whether you are students and parents evaluating schools to attend, staff looking for a great place to work, faculty seeking an enriching environment for teaching and scholarship, or partners looking to engage with our many assets.  Welcome to UVM!
