Gary L. Derr began working in the executive offices at the University of Vermont in July 2000. During that period he served in a variety of roles, including Executive Assistant to the Provost and Senior Vice President and Director of Operations/Chief of Staff to the President and Provost, before being named to his current position as Vice President for Operations and Public Safety. Before coming to UVM he served as Dean of Students at Green Mountain College in Poultney, Vermont (1990–2000), Assistant Dean of Students at the University of Hartford (1984–1990), and Director of Housing at Alliance College (1980–1984).
Mr. Derr earned his Doctorate of Education from the University of Vermont in 2002, Master of Arts in Higher Education Administration from the University of Connecticut in 1984, and Bachelor of Arts in Religion from Thiel College in 1980. The topic of his doctoral research was how spirituality shapes presidential leadership.
Gary Derr and his wife, Lynn Bondurant (UVM ’80), live in Danby, Vermont, along with their cat “BB” and two horses. They enjoy gardening (all types), sailing, skiing, snowshoeing, and nearly all other outdoor activities. He is originally from Pennsylvania, outside of Philadelphia.
