Biography of Vice President for Executive Operations
Gary L. Derr
Gary L. Derr began work in the executive offices at the University of Vermont in July 2000. During that period he served in a variety of roles including Executive Assistant to the Provost and Senior Vice President and Director of Operations, Chief of Staff to the President and Provost, and his current position Vice President for Executive Operations and Chief of Staff to the President. Prior to his current position, he served as Dean of Students at Green Mountain College in Poultney Vermont from 1990 –2000. Additionally, he served as Assistant Dean of Students at the University of Hartford from 1984 –1990 and as Director of Housing at Alliance College from 1980-1984.
He earned his Doctorate of Education degree from the University of Vermont in May 2002, Master of Arts Degree in Higher Education Administration from the University of Connecticut in May 1984, and his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Religion from Thiel College in 1980. The topic of his doctoral research was how spirituality shapes presidential leadership.
Gary Derr and his wife Lynn Bondurant (UVM ’80) live in Danby, Vermont along with their cat “BB” and two horses Currier and Doc. They enjoy gardening (all types), sailing, skiing, snowshoeing and almost anything outdoors. He is originally from Pennsylvania outside of Philadelphia.
