Connect with the Study Abroad Advising Team

UVM’s Office of International Education study abroad advising team is made up of passionate international educators who look forward to engaging with you in preparation for your time abroad. As you begin your study abroad program exploration and you navigate the study abroad application process, we wish to outline the ways in which you can connect with our team.

Study Abroad 101

Study Abroad 101 sessions are offered virtually and in-person while classes are in session. This first step provides students with important information about the types of study abroad programs available, an overview of the study abroad application process, and how financial aid, credit transfer, and other factors may affect the types of programs they choose to consider. Students are also introduced to the GoAbroad system, UVM’s approved study abroad program database and application system.

This session is required for all students wishing to study abroad as a first step in the process. You can sign up for the session on Microsoft Bookings!

Drop-in Advising Appointment

Drop-in Advising Appointments are offered in-person and are intended for students who:

  • are interested in study abroad but uncertain about where they want to go
  • have selected a program but need guidance on the study abroad process (beyond what is outlined in Study Abroad 101)
  • want to meet with a Study Abroad Advisor

During a Drop-in Advising Appointment, UVM study abroad advising staff will discuss important considerations when choosing your destination and review the application process. During the session students will initiate or work through previously opened GoAbroad application - either for general advising (unknown destination/term) or for a specific program and term. Students will have the opportunity to discuss any questions they have during the session. Please bring a laptop to this session.

Pre-requisite for Drop-in Advising Appointments: Students must complete the Study Abroad 101 requirement prior to attending a Drop-in Advising Appointment.

Individual Advising Appointment

Individual advising appointments with a study abroad advisor are required for students applying to UVM programs and ISEP programs. To schedule an individual advising appointment please login to your GoAbroad account and review the instructions found in the “UVM/ISEP: Individual Advising Appointment with Study Abroad Advisor” checklist item.

Meeting with a study abroad advisor is optional for students applying to External or Direct-Enroll programs. Students applying to these program types can request an individual appointment with a study abroad advisor by emailing studyabroad@uvm.edu. All requests will be reviewed within 5 business days and if appropriate the student will be invited to schedule an appointment with an advisor.

Pre-requisites for Individual Advising Appointments:

·   Students need to have completed the Study Abroad 101 requirement.

·   Students need to have initiated a GoAbroad record. If you have not yet done so, we encourage you to attend a Drop-in Advising Appointment (see above).

·   Students that have initiated a general advising record (unknown destination/term) need to complete the Advising Profile in GoAbroad.

·   Students need to have met with their academic advisor and completed the Academic Planning Form specific to their school or college.

NOTE: These steps will require advanced action and planning. Advising appointment availability can be limited, especially as the deadline approaches. You should schedule your appointment with a study abroad advisor to occur no later than 10 business days prior to the deadline to ensure adequate time to complete the application requirements. We encourage students to arrange the appointment well before that - an application will be considered late if a student cannot complete this requirement prior to the state deadline and exceptions will not be considered if students waited until under 10 business days prior to the deadline to arrange the appointment and are then unable to secure a time. Appointments are only available during regular business hours and are filled on a first-come-first-serve basis.
