This page is specific to staff at the University of Vermont who may need to submit an Emergency Grant Application on behalf of a student. When possible, a student should submit the student application directly, but when necessary a staff member may submit this version of the application on the student's behalf.

The UVM Emergency Grant Program provides one-time financial grants to assist currently enrolled degree-seeking UVM students who are unable to meet immediate, essential expenses because of temporary hardship related to an unexpected situation or emergency.

Grant amounts vary based on each specific situation, and are generally not awarded for more than $500. These grants are intended as one-time, immediate assistance and, as gift aid, do not need to be repaid. These grants may need to be factored into the overall financial aid offer a student has received, where applicable.

The UVM Emergency Grant is NOT intended for students seeking assistance to cover their standard UVM charges or to assist with on-going financial hardship. If a student is having trouble covering their standard UVM costs (tuition, comprehensive fee, room, meal plan) or is facing an on-going financial hardship, please reach out to Student Financial Services to connect the student with a counselor. Our SFS counselors will review the current financial aid offer, and determine any additional options that may be available to help.

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. The student should receive a decision on the submitted request within two weeks of submission; applications requiring further clarification or documentation may take longer to review. The decision is final and will be sent to the student's UVM email address. Funding is limited and not guaranteed.

STUDENT ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • Currently experiencing an unexpected event or emergency that has caused an immediate short-term financial hardship
  • Have a current FAFSA on file with UVM, unless not eligible to file due to international or other ineligible status
  • Have utilized, to the extent possible, all eligible and applicable financial aid sources, including any offered student loans
    • Please note that unwillingness to borrow loans does not constitute a financial hardship
  • ​Currently enrolled and active in a degree program at the University of Vermont
  • Enrolled at UVM for the term for which the funds are being requested
  • Pursuing an undergraduate, graduate or medical degree at UVM

Examples of eligible expense types:

These are examples of expenses that may be considered, but approval for a grant depends on the specific situation, and having an expense within one or more of these categories does not guarantee approval.

  • Replacement of essential personal belongings due to fire, flood, theft, or natural disaster
  • Emergency or temporary housing, assistance with rent or essential utilities
  • Unexpected additional expenses related to enrollment
  • Food and groceries (including personal care items)
  • Medications or costs related to emergency medical care (not covered by insurance)
  • Emergency transportation costs related to family death or illness
  • Safety related needs (i.e. changing a door lock)
  • Childcare
  • Other emergency situations that will impact a student's ability to fully participate and make academic progress

Examples of expense types that are NOT eligible:

  • Conduct fines, parking tickets, library fees
  • Tuition and comprehensive fees
  • On-campus room and meal plan expenses
  • Non-essential utilities, household or furniture costs
  • Non-essential travel/transportation costs
  • Costs associated with pet ownership/care

DOCUMENTATION REQUIREMENTS

Students may be asked to supply documentation of the expenses for which emergency grant funding is being requested. Requested documentation may include medical bills, essential utility bills, police reports or court records, receipts of invoices pertaining to the expenses, travel related documentation, etc. If documentation is requested after the application is submitted, review of the application will not proceed until the requested documentation is provided. Documentation will only be requested when necessary to make an awarding decision.

FINANCIAL AID OFFER CONSIDERATIONS

All grants, including the UVM Emergency Grant, must be factored into a student's overall financial aid offer. If awarding of the UVM Emergency Grant will result in a dollar-for-dollar reduction to other aid, the grant will not be awarded. In these cases, students will be informed of the outcome and of any alternative options for assistance.
