The University of Vermont is a national leader in the study of the environment. The College of Arts & Sciences offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in Environmental Studies (ENVS). ENVS students go both broad and deep. As students in the liberal arts, there are opportunities to sample throughout the curriculum while developing an expertise in environmental studies, through coursework in ecology, history, geography and political science. Students can choose a concentrated study of courses in a particular interest, pursue a hands on experience and are encouraged to study abroad.

As of 2022, UVM is streamlining pathways for studying the Environment. The Environmental Studies major (available in the Rubenstein School and College of Agriculture and Life Sciences for students who enrolled in Fall 2021 and prior) will be offered exclusively in the College of Arts and Sciences for incoming students as of Spring 2022.

Beyond the classroom

ENVS students pursue internships, service-learning courses, and independent research, as well as off-campus and co-curricular activities that shape their understanding of Environmental Studies and help build their resumes. For example, current student Nathan Grutchfield put his Spanish and Environmental Studies majors to work as an intern in Puerto Rico with Fundacion Amigos de El Yunque, a forest rescue.

The Department encourages Study Abroad as an important possible part of the major or minor.

The ENVS minor is available to students in all UVM colleges/schools.

Minor Requirements: 17 credits - ENVS 1500, ENVS 1510, and a minimum of 9 credits in 1000-2000 level environmentally-related courses.
