Lecturer

Mohamad Chakaki (he/him) grew up playing in the sand and surf on both sides of the Arabian Peninsula, and then on the edges of eastern forests and city streets in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. His intellectual and professional interests lie where the lines blur between cities and nature, art and science, East and West, and so on.

Mohamad's teaching, coaching, and facilitation focuses on strengthening our internal capacity to meet the complexity and uncertainty of our current social and ecological challenges with a clear-eyed, creative, and compassionate response that connects mind and heart.

Associations and Affiliations

Mohamad is a Senior Fellow at Center for Whole Communities and the Environmental Leadership Program, a part-time faculty member at the Conway School of Landscape Design, and an affiliated trainer/mentor with Coaching for Healing, Justice, and Liberation.

Areas of Expertise and/or Research

Community leadership and participation in urban ecological design and planning, design inquiry as a reflective practice, global non-Western approaches to ecological design and planning

Education

  • Current PhD student in Transdisciplinary Leadership, University of Vermont Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources
  • Completed doctoral coursework at the Aga Khan Program for Islamic Architecture, School of Architecture and Planning, MIT
  • Masters of Environmental Management with a focus on Urban Ecology & Environmental Design, Yale School of the Environment.
