New to UVM or to exploring an interest in the Health Professions? Here are 6 quick tips to set yourself up for success:

1. Research the Field

Keep your mind open as to which career path is the best fit. While some health professions are more obvious than others, you would be surprised to know just how many pathways there are to a meaningful career in health.  Invest some time in exploring pathways you might not yet considered – there are a myriad of ways to engage in the health professions!

2. Choose a Major & Take Recommended Courses

Prioritizing your academics is essential regardless of which profession you intend to pursue. Choose a path of study that captures your interests and then excel in that path.  There is no “pre-health” major at UVM because the best providers come from rich and varied backgrounds.  That said, many health professions require credentials that includes graduate or professional school – if applicable, be sure to consider the prerequisites of such programs in choosing your courses.  You and your academic advisor can use our Course Recommendations (below) to identify UVM courses that fill the most common requirements to plan out your course of study.

3. Join a Club

UVM has hundreds of student clubs and organizations focused on a range of different interest areas - including 20+ related to healthcare & wellbeing. Getting involved in any student club or organization is a great way to meet new people, gain new experiences, and learn more about yourself and your interests.  Health-specific clubs can also connect you with opportunities that expand your awareness of health-related issues and connect you with others who share your passion.

4. Join the Health Profession Interest Group (HPIG) on UVM Connect
