Biography

Tinaz, Berke

Appointed to the Board by the Associate Directors for the Appointment of Student Trustees, Inc., in 2020. Term expires in March 2022. Born in Izmir, Turkey. Educated as an international baccalaureate student at The Koc School in Istanbul, Turkey, 2012; and at Skidmore College, BA, Biology, 2016. Berke is a PhD student, class of 2022, studying plant biology in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. In 2015, Berke worked in the Cornell University’s Rose Lab working on the characterization of Arabidopsis thaliana xylanase genes. His current UVM affiliations include Senator on the Graduate Student Senate (GSS); GSS representative on the Faculty Senate Student Affairs Committee; Assistant Coach for UVM’s rowing team; and Plant Biology Department Graduate Student Representative. Berke formerly served as the Secretary of GSS and a GSS representative on the Board of Trustee’s Educational Policy and Institutional Resources Committee. During his studies at The Koc School, Berke had a number of roles with the Model United Nations Development Programme. While at Skidmore, he worked in David Domozych’s lab all four years working on Penium margaritaceum cell walls; rowed on the varsity crew team; was a Biology Department student representative; and also served as a volunteer organizer and swimmer with the Special Olympics New York.
