Funding for Summer Internships!

Summer Internship Scholarships help to defray the costs of living for students who accept a career-related internship that is unpaid or underpaid (meaning the payment you receive is not enough to cover your essential needs).

Applications due April 11, 2024

Apply Now

This year, CAS students must apply separately:

CAS Scholarship Application

Eligible CAS students who do not receive CAS funding will be automatically considered for Career Center funding. You do not need to fill out both applications.

Eligibility Criteria

Fundable internships must:

  • Take place between May 1 and August 31, 2024

  • Involve at least 200 hours of work in total

  • Pay less than $3000 for the summer

All applicants must:

  • Have applied for a summer internship. (We understand there’s a chance you’ll not have confirmation of your internship before April 11, 2024.)

  • Be a current degree-seeking undergraduate UVM student in good standing who plans to continue studies in the fall (i.e., awards are not available to graduating seniors).

International Students

International students may have additional requirements as a condition of their visa. Check with the Office of International Education and your advisor to ensure any such requirements are fulfilled.  If you are awarded a scholarship, it may be taxed at a different rate than domestic students. Please contact Student Financial Services if you have questions.

2024 Timeline

Once you have applied to an internship opportunity, you can then apply for an internship scholarship. You do not need to have secured an internship to apply for funding - you just need to have applied to the internship.

Key Dates:

Jan 17 - Application process opens
April 11 - Application deadline
April 12 - April 24: Applications reviewed by the scholarship selection committee
April 25 - Scholarship selection committee meets to discuss and decide on awards
Apr 26 - Applicants receive an email indicating that they have been awarded, waitlisted*, or not funded
May 11 - Deadline for awardees to:

  • submit a letter from their internship supervisor that confirms their internship offer
  • enroll in a summer course (SINT or other course)
  • sign up for direct deposit with Student Financial Services

Interning abroad requires further approval by the  Office of International Education  - please contact them  ASAP as the approval process can take some time!

*Students placed on the waitlist will be notified on a rolling basis if funds become available. Waitlisted students will receive final award decisions via UVM email by the end of May.  If you are waitlisted, be sure to check your UVM email throughout May so you’ll know if you’ve been offered funding.

Application & Selection Details

The application will ask for

1. Expected project(s), deliverables or work for this internship.

2. Clear, specific, learning goals for your internship experience relating to:

3. Your insight into how these goals will challenge you in new ways beyond your current experience and facilitate your learning.

(Note the timeline above to see when the form opens)

Selection

A committee of staff and faculty members will make the final decision on the dollar amount and recipient(s) for each award.

If you are awarded funding and decide to intern at an organization different from what you detailed in your application, you will be asked to submit an updated scholarship application. The committee will review your updated application and decide to do one of the following:
- Award the scholarship as originally planned
- Adjust the scholarship amount or funding source (if possible)
- Withdraw funding

Awardee Responsibilities

  • All scholarship recipients are required to be enrolled in UVM during the summer semester when the internship occurs. If you don't want or need credit, we suggest the $110 SINT summer internship credit option.

  • Awardees must provide an email from the internship employer confirming the internship offer after being granted an award.

  • Once the internship is complete, all scholarship awardees will be contacted and encouraged to submit a video or written reflection addressing how the internship helped them grow and how it affected their career trajectory. Sharing your experiences can help future students decide if an internship is a good fit for them.
  • Students who receive awards from donor-funded scholarships will be asked to write a thank-you note to the award benefactor.

  • All interns are encouraged to enter the Experiences Photo contest in September and will be eligible for great prizes! See past entries here.

  • NOTE: Funds received from internship awards are not wages or compensation for hours worked. There may be financial aid and/or tax implications for awards. If you have questions about the impact of a scholarship, please consult with the Student Financial Aid office or your tax professional.
