The Gund Institute for Environment will move across the University of Vermont campus to Farrell Hall this week.
We first announced the move to Fellows, students and postdocs earlier this year. Now we are excited to share this news with our broader community of alumni, Global Affiliates, partners, co-authors and event attendees.
Transitioning to a larger, better-designed space will help to accommodate the growing Gund community, unlock greater collaboration, and advance our mission of real-world impact.
All the activities that occurred in Johnson House, our home since 2002, will move to Farrell Hall effective January 2020.
We’re confident this will be a great improvement for Gund. We’ve taken care to plan for a smooth transition to the new building. And we encourage everyone to lean into this change together.
Here’s what you need to know about the move.
Farrell Hall map
The Gund is moving to Farrell Hall, located at 210 Colchester Ave., Burlington, Vermont, 05405. This is roughly a 10-minute walk across campus from Johnson House. We've created a map to help with wayfinding (high-rez).
Reasons for moving
As mentioned in our initial announcement, our community has doubled in less than three years, creating a major space crunch. We were projected to be 150% over Johnson House’s capacity by Fall 2020. Without action, our next step was to relocate people out of Johnson House.
Farrell Hall solves this and more. It enables us to house more Fellows, students, and postdocs together. Importantly, it’s also better designed for our community, with multiple conference rooms, collaboration corners, informal meeting spaces, and technology. It will unlock greater interaction and collaboration.
Moving dates
The move will happen on Wednesday, December 18 and Thursday, December 19. Johnson House residents must coordinate with Nora Shahoud to ensure office furniture, equipment and belongings are packed and labelled by 4 pm on Tuesday, December 17 for movers. Fragile items (monitors, etc.), should be moved by end of day December 17, and can be stored in Farrell Hall room 107 (glass conference room).
Building access
Farrell Hall’s doors will be open from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm on UVM business days. Everyone with desks in Farrell will also have after-hours access with their CATcard. If you have an issue with card access, please contact Nora. Our cards will stop working for Johnson House on December 31, and office keys must be returned to Nora by December 18.
Room availability
Three conference rooms with A/V technology can be booked through Outlook:
- First floor – Room 107 (15 people)
- Second floor – Room 207 (12 people)
- Basement – Room 005 (30 people)
Three offices with six drop-in workspaces are available Gund community members. All you need to do is check-in with Nora when you arrive.
Farrell Hall also has a variety of informal gathering spaces that are great for student-advisor meetings or collaboration brainstorming.
Food and coffee
To build community in Farrell and across UVM, Gund will host coffee and tea breaks twice daily in Farrell Hall’s first floor common area, at 10 am and 2 pm, to start. All Gund community members are welcome.
Nearby cafes and eateries are listed on our wayfinding map. Their hours of operation will be posted in Farrell Hall.

Gund Teas and other events will continue in Farrell Hall. As always, our upcoming events are on the Gund events page.
‘Housewarming’ event at Farrell Hall
Finally, all are invited to our Farrell Hall “housewarming” celebration, on Thursday, January 23 from 4:30-6 pm. This will be an opportunity to gather, reconnect after the holidays, swap stories from 18 years in our dear old farmhouse, and brainstorm how to make Farrell Hall great. Watch for details in early 2020.
