UVM PDA Organization

UVM PDA members are postdoc scholars from all UVM colleges. Our activities are overseen by the PDA executive committee, elected annually from PDA members as outlined in the bylaws (doc).

Brandon Bensel: Chair

Brandon Bensel

Department of Molecular Physiology & Biophysics

Brandon is a postdoctoral associate in the laboratory of David Warshaw. His research iterest is in the mechanisms that govern intracellular cargo transport. To study this, he employs a model systerm wherein he reconstitutes networks of microtubules and actin filaments in vitro, maps those networks in 3 dimensions using superresolution microscopy, and observes transport of liposomes through the networks driven by kinesin and myosin motors. Outside of lab, Brandon is an avid runner and fisherman, enjoying other outdoor activities like disc golf, hiking, and cycling. He spends the occasional day indoors playing video games by the warm glow of his laptop screen.

Rebekah Honce: Secretary

Department of Medicine: Immunobiology/Pulmonology and Critical Care

Bekah is a postdoctoral associate in the laboratory of Jason Botten and is a T32 fellow in the Vermont Lung Center. She considers herself a virologist that dabbles in immunology and disease ecology to answer questions surrounding the spillover of viral pathogens from animals to humans. Bekah currently works with rodent-borne arenaviruses, which cause no overt disease in their natural reservoir host but can inflict severe disease outcomes in humans. She obtained her PhD from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, with her research based at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital investigating influenza and coronavirus pathogenesis, evolution, and vaccine development in high-risk hosts. Outside of lab, you can find Bekah hiking with her rescue dog Maple, trying to teach tricks to her two tabby cats, or attempting to start an urban garden. She also enjoys concert-going with her partner and is always looking for the next great show!

Mikaela Fudolig: Webmaster and Public Relations Officer

Mikaela Fudolig

Vermont Complex Systems Center

Mikaela is a postdoctoral associate at the Vermont Complex Systems Center. Under the supervision of Peter Dodds and Chris Danforth who head the Computational Story Lab, she works on unearthing stories and narratives from digital traces such as those found in social media, and how these relate to social phenomena. She prefers winter sports to summer sports, and has found Vermont an ideal base for learning to ski. As the webmaster and PR officer, she updates the PDA website and promotes the PDA and its activities to its members.

Anil Lalwani: Postdoc-at-large

Anil Lalwani

Office of Institutional Research and Assessment

Anil is a postdoctoral associate at the Office of Institutional Research. In this role, Anil provides planning and support for student learning assessment and curricular management activities across all academic programs offered at UVM. As a scholar and researcher, Anil's current professional interests include student engagement, mentoring and help-seeking among first-generation, BIPOC, international and QT students. Along with work, Anil enjoys bicycling, hiking, spending time in nature, digital watercolor painting, street photography and cooking – all of which Anil is planning to explore further in and around the green mountain state.

Mojtaba Zeraatpisheh: Postdoc-at-large

Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources and Gund Institute for Environment

Mojtaba is a Postdoctoral Associate in Digital Soil Mapping at the Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources and a Fellow of the Gund Institute for Environment at the University of Vermont. Mojtaba is currently investigating the impact of environmental factors on Soil Organic Carbon content in the northeastern US through a digital soil mapping approach. His work typically combines open source and field data, remote sensing, machine learning, thematic maps, climatic factors, legacy soil data, and land use/land cover maps to gain insight on SOC controlling factors.  In addition to his work, Mojtaba enjoys hiking, playing soccer, and gardening.
