Linguistics Club

UVM Linguistics Club is an organization that aims to create a comfortable environment to help students from any academic background explore their interests in the field of linguistics! Check for meeting locations/times, topics, and  to be added to our email list. Have questions? Contact Steph Bronfman (email)

*Caption: The Linguistics Club donated this chair to Brennans Pub in 2019, featuring the (un)official mascot of Linguistics: a wug! This cute little creature was a task in the first child language acquisition studies (The Wug Test), showing that children can subconsciously apply language-specific rules. Adults do it too: we would say more than one “wug” are “wugZ”, not “wugS”.

Field Experiences

Students gather in the field

Members of the UVM Linguistics Club visited the Linguistic Society of America 2019 Annual Meeting in New York City. UVM Linguistics Director, Julie Roberts, presented research on the Vermont dialect: "Is there anything left of the traditional Vermont dialect? A study of Vermont’s last frontier." Students had a chance to attend many lectures presented by linguistics scholars from around the globe.

Above: Members of the Linguistics Club present a chair they painted for Bennan's Pub, an on-campus eatery that features chairs designed by various student groups.

Study Abroad

Students in our department take advantage of the many study abroad opportunities available through UVM’s membership in the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP). Find out more about study abroad with the Office of International Education.

Learning Communities

UVM’s residential learning communities are for students interested in exploring an array of diverse subjects alongside their peers. Students have an opportunity to learn outside the classroom in order to fully understand and learn in a social, communal setting. Find out more here!
