Welcome to UVM, in-person &/or virtually!

Employers are essential partners in our mission to connect students to the people, opportunities & resources.  Thank you for reviewing and honoring these responsibilities

Expectations for employers seeking to recruit with UVM:

Job Posting

Once approved in Handshake, employers can post legitimate opportunities that follow ethical recruiting guidelines.

  • Postings for external job boards, promotion of products or services to other students, requests for financial investments by the employee/intern/volunteer, home-based businesses, multi-level marketing, and/or international positions that can’t be assessed online or via best practice resources (e.g., SHRM, NACE, GoinGlobal) will not be approved.
  • Employment agencies and search firms may list openings on Handshake as long as they remain in accordance with Handshake's Privacy Policy & Terms of Service and clearly identify themselves as third-party recruiters, provide contact information on the organization they are recruiting for, do not charge any fees, nor disclose job seekers information without obtaining prior consent.

On Campus Engagement

Employers wishing to come to campus should:

  • Make all arrangements for presentations, career fairs and interviews—on campus or virtual—through the Career Center and operating within the limits of those arrangements.
  • Stick to the schedule, marketing methods, and locations agreed upon, and announced to the University of Vermont community, allowing sufficient time for the Career Center to announce/publish their visit.
  • Send a qualified interviewer or informed representative of the organization to meet with students.
  • Ensure appropriate ethical and legal conduct of the organization’s representatives.

Internships + Micro-internships

Internships should consist of well-structured learning experiences with clearly outlined responsibilities, regular supervision and evaluation. Responsibilities should relate to the student’s academic or career interests.

  • Internships must meet the standards dictated by the US Department of Labor, as outlined in Fact Sheet #71 - Requiring that interns be paid minimum wage unless the intern is the “primary beneficiary” of the intern-employer relationship.

  • Contact us with questions or learn more on how to develop and enhance your internship program

  • We partner with Parker Dewey to enhance talent sourcing and candidate selection for short-term, professional, paid projects. Visit our  Micro-internship page for more on account creation, project posting, and cadidate searches.

We take our responsibilities seriously too! The Career Center is responsible for:

  • Adhering to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Principles for Ethical Professional Practice
  • Offering programs and services to all students, respecting their freedom of choice in developing a career direction, and providing a welcoming environment for students of every race, color, religion, national or ethnic origin, age, sex, sexual orientation, marital or veteran status, ability/disability, or gender identity or expression.
  • Providing a setting for students and employers to conduct the exploration of employment/graduate school opportunities in an environment that is pleasant, open and efficient and handling all files in a confidential manner, except when a party has authorized the Career Center, in writing, to do otherwise.
  • Reviewing all employer requests to join Handshake (our career services platform), and vetting employers with the expectation of approving those providing legitimate employment and experiential learning opportunities. Postings for external job boards, promotion of products or services to other students, requests for financial investment by the employee/intern/volunteer, home-based businesses, multi-level marketing, and/or international positions that can’t be assessed online or via best practice resources (e.g., SHRM, NACE, Going Global or UVM Connect) will not be approved.
  • Acting to limit the risk of sharing opportunities with organizations that violate laws or regulations.
