"Racial Aikido provided a safe and comfortable environment for me to express what I was seeing about my identity and race. It was great to hear other stories and that made me feel less alone. An amazing experience!" - Participant, Racial Aikido 2014
Racial Aikido is an annual free retreat that was created by the ALANA Student Center and the Center for Cultural Pluralism in 2006. The retreat is facilitated by UVM staff of color for self-identifying students of color only. Racial Aikido seeks to prepare students of color with the knowledge and skills to:
- Recognize the construct of race and racism within the U.S. context
- Explore their own racial and ethnic identity/ies
- Respond to acts of racism
- Debunk vicious stereotypes in order to maintain a positive self-image
- Hear from the impact of racism
Learn tools to combat racism!
If you identify as a student of color (ALANA/Bi/Multiracial) who has first-hand experience with racism and would like to learn skills to handle such situations, here is an opportunity for you! Racial Aikido is a diversity training specifically designed for students of colors.
