FLEMING MUSEUM OF ART EDUCATION KITS

After evaluating the education kit program this summer, Fleming staff has decided to remove several kits from circulation in order to better align them with the museum’s own rich collection and to update the resources with enriching contextual information.

We have retained four kits for circulation this year. The Ancient Egypt kit is a perennial favorite that includes objects and historical information that enhances the study these ancient materials. We have updated the Abenaki kit with more resources, including links to a clearinghouse of resources produced by the Abenaki Art Association to contextualize and enrich the objects made for the museum kit by Abenaki artists. We have also revamped the Japanese Woodblock Printing kit to include more reproductions of Edo- and Meiji-era prints that will be of interest to classes studying samurais, Kabuki actors, and views of the natural world, in addition to the historical printing materials that might inspire your classes to experiment with printing on your own. Finally, the Inca kit has been renamed the Andean Textile kit, which tells a focused story about how contemporary Andean weavers transform past techniques and materials into textiles today.

This fall, the Fleming will launch a digital database that will enable classes to explore the Museum’s collection beyond what is on view in the galleries. As we revamp the hands-on experiences and begin producing digital resources, we will consult with educators across the curriculum and grade levels to ensure that our opportunities for object-based learning are flexible, contextual, and engaging.

ABENAKI

Flag from the Abenaki Kit

Projectile points, pot sherds, stone tools, a crooked knife, sweetgrass basket, ash-splint basket, and the flag of the Abenaki nation. There are a number of substantial history books by Frederick Wiseman, Joseph and Jesse Bruchac, and other Abenaki historians: some are appropriate for teachers who, others are for middle-school level readers who want to learn more independently, other storybooks and graphic novels are appropriate for all ages.

ANCIENT EGYPT

Papyrus from the Ancient Egypt Kit

Amulets, scarabs, a bronze statuette of Osiris, a fragment of linen wrapping, stone weights, papyrus, and reproductions of relief sculptures and the Rosetta Stone. These authentic objects are accompanied by books about hieroglyphs, timelines and atlases, and activity books about pyramids and mummies.

JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINTING

Object from the Woodblock Printing Kit

The history and technique of the Japanese woodblock print are illustrated with two 19th-c. prints, books, and tools. The kit also contains reproductions of prints by Hokusai, Hiroshige, and other notable printing artists from the Edo and Meiji period, with books and prints that feature samurai, the natural world, views of Mt. Fuji, and Kabuki actors.

CONTEMPORARY ANDEAN TEXTILES

Object from the Inca Kit

Designed by a local fiber artist who traveled widely in Peru, this kit features contemporary Quechua textiles: jakima ribbons and a guide to their meanings, clothing, a nawi awapa 3-D textile, slings used for work and dance, and a replica of a quipu, an ancient Incan textile for recording events and other information via knotted yarn. These contemporary textiles are enhanced with information about how today’s makers call back to ancient Incan patterns, communication systems, and stories.
