The former Elihu B. Taft School is a two-story, gable-roofed neoclassical-style brick building located at the corner of Pearl Street and South Williams Street in Burlington, VT, designed by Frank Lyman Austin and built in 1938. The building has been designated as “historically significant”.

The building was renovated and rehabilitated for use by the UVM Art Department. The renovations were performed in two phases, to implement necessary repairs and will include modifications to provide ADA accessibility and compliance with current building codes.  The scope of work for Phase I included the installation of an elevator, new ADA restrooms and entrance ramp, fire alarm system, data and telephone service and electronics, and fit-out of renovated rooms to include aesthetic treatment of walls, ceilings, and floor coverings; new lights, and upgraded ventilation. Phase II scope included the replacement of the electrical service to the building, replacement of the heating system from steam radiators to hot water radiation, existing restroom upgrades, repair to exterior deferred maintenance, and fit-out of renovated rooms including aesthetic treatment of walls, ceilings, and floor coverings; new lights, and upgraded ventilation.
