Fingerprinting Procedure

We understand that some folks may experience anxiety upon entering a police department and interacting with police department staff. So that you know what to expect when you arrive for your appointment, we have outlined the updated fingerprint procedures for you below:

  • You must have an appointment scheduled to be fingerprinted. Click here to schedule
  • Fingerprinting is conducted at UVM Police Services offices, 284 East Avenue in Burlington. Our entrance is behind the police cruiser parking spots, on the south side of the building (bottom floor).
  • If you have experienced any symptoms of COVID-19 within the past 7 days, or exhibit any signs at the office, please reschedule your appointment. There is no fee for rescheduling an appointment.
  • You will be asked to provide your CatCard (with your photo visible--virtual is ok) and your government-issued photo ID. Along with your IDs, you will be asked to provide your Fingerprint Authorization Certificate. This form must be signed by a representative from the agency you're being fingerprinted for. If your form is not signed, we cannot process your fingerprints and your appointment will need to be rescheduled.
  • Upon verifying that your paperwork is in order, the staff member will process your IDs with Dispatch and charge your CatCard. Please ensure that you have the necessary amount of Cat$cratch loaded onto your CatCard before you arrive for your appointment: $12 for the first set of prints, and $10 for each subsequent set. You can add money to your Cat$cratch account here: https://www.uvm.edu/catcard/forms/make-online-deposit
  • Once your IDs have been processed, staff will invite you into the department.
  • Our staff will lead you back to the processing area.
    • UVM Police is required by the federal government to collect demographic information from each individual that we fingerprint, including Sex and Race. This demographic information is submitted to the FBI, in accordance with 28 U.S.C. § 534, for inclusion in the national Fingerprint Identification Record System (FIRS). Sex must be reported as either Male or Female, and Race must be listed as one of the categories listed in the table below. We understand that providing this information may be uncomfortable and that these categories may not accurately reflect your Sex, Gender, or Race. Please know that UVM Police does not retain this information internally, and that it is only collected in accordance with the requirements for fingerprinting by the federal government. Fingerprints sent to the federal government without this information will be rejected and not processed. The table below outlines the race options presented in the system (copied from the FBI's "Guidelines for Preparation of Fingerprint Cards and Associated Criminal History):
      Race Code Table
      EXTERNAL CODELITERALDESCRIPTION (IF SUBJECT IS)
AAsian or Pacific IslanderChinese, Japanese, Filipino, Korean, Polynesian, Indian, Indonesian, Asian Indian, Samoan, or other Pacific Islander

    • We recognize that this can make applicants uncomfortable. Several applicants in the past have indicated that they would like their race to be entered as "Unknown". Please let us know if that is your preference.
  • After your information is entered into the system, the staff member will take your fingerprints using the LiveScan machine.
  • Once your fingerprints are submitted, our staff will give you a receipt with the fingerprinting record number. We mail the original requisition from to the Vermont Criminal Information Center in order to proccess your fingerprints.
Information on this page will be updated in a timely manner as state and federal guidance changes, as well as University and department policy and protocol change.
