Meeting the Sustainability Requirement

All undergraduate degree students matriculating in Fall 2015 or later must meet a General Education requirement in sustainability. To meet this requirement, students must complete a course, curriculum, or co-curricular module prior to graduation that has been approved by the Faculty Senate's Sustainability Curriculum Review Committee.

Four Paths to Meeting the Sustainability Requirement

  1. Courses with an SU designation
  2. Approved sustainability curriculum
  3. Transfer courses that have been reviewed and approved for SU designation
  4. Approved sustainability experiential learning experience

Options for the Sustainability Experiential Learning Pathway

  • Option A: Student-driven independent study pathway - individual students fill out a template explaining what they did to learn the sustainability learning outcomes and then demonstrate their learning. Students submit the completed PDF icon Sustainability Learning Outcomes Experiential Path Application (PDF) to scrc@uvm.edu for consideration.
  • Option B: Faculty-driven experiential learning pathway - a faculty member applies for their research project, internship, club, program, etc. to earn sustainability designation. Faculty submit the proposal via the Courseleaf system.

Sustainability Credit Transfer Guidelines

To be considered for sustainability credit, a course must carry at least three credits (or the equivalent). The Office of Transfer Affairs will conduct the first review of your courses to determine whether they are comparable in content, nature, and intensity to course offerings in the corresponding discipline at UVM. If their review determines that you have not yet fulfilled the Sustainability requirement, but you believe that one or more of your prior courses should qualify, please complete the General Education Requirement Course Fulfillment Form. The form will prompt you to submit a detailed syllabus of the transferred course in question, as well as an essay that explicitly states how the transferred course meets the sustainability criteria.
