Professor Beer teaches courses in comparative politics, Latin American politics, and global gender inequality. She specializes in Mexican politics. Her research interests include democratization, subnational politics, and gender in politics.  Recent publications focus on abortion, gay rights, violence against women laws, and women’s policy agencies in Mexico. Her research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the Social Science Research Council, and the Latin American Institute of the University of New Mexico. She was a Research Fellow at the University of California, San Diego, Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies. Her book, Institutional Change and Electoral Competition in Mexico, was published by the University of Notre Dame Press. She has also published in journals such as the American Political Science Review, Comparative Politics, Comparative Political Studies, Latin American Research Review, Studies in Comparative International Development, State Politics and Policy Quarterly, and International Studies Quarterly. Professor Beer is the Contributing Editor of the Mexican Government and Politics section of the Handbook of Latin American Studies at the Library of Congress.
