$10,000 each for up to 2 recipients, with potential for renewal.

Requirements for consideration

• Be enrolled as a either:
  • a full-time (12 or more credits) undergraduate student at UVM with a declared major of Chemistry or Biochemistry.
  • a graduate student pursuing a Master's at UVM in education or teaching, who earned a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or a Chemistry-related discipline.
• Be maintaining a 3.0 cumulative GPA at UVM.
• Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
• Demonstrate a commitment to become a high school chemistry teacher upon graduation.
• Agree to submit a brief annual written statement to the scholarship donor describing your career status for the first 5 years following graduation.

In selecting between equally qualified candidates, UVM will give preference to students with demonstrated financial need.

Recipients will have the $10,000 scholarship factored into their overall financial aid offer. Students may wish to consult with Student Financial Services prior to applying to determine if this scholarship will impact eligibility for any other sources of financial aid.

Renewal

As long as recipients continue to meet the eligibility requirements listed above, the scholarship may be renewed until such time as they complete the necessary course-work to obtain their undergraduate chemistry degree and teachers' certification, for up to 6 years.

Application Process

Applicants must submit a short essay about how they qualify for this scholarship, in particular focusing on your career plans upon graduation and commitment to becoming a high school chemistry teacher. Please include your plans for obtaining a teachers' certification along with completion of your Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, if you have not already earned it.

Please submit your essay to scholarships@uvm.edu. The essay may be either written in the body of the email or attached.

Review of applications will take place immediately following the application deadline. We plan to notify applicants by email of the outcome by September 30. Notifications will be sent to your UVM email.

Priority is given to candidates with a 4-H background and must be a resident of Vermont. The 4-H experience may come from either past or current experience.

If you are a UVM undergraduate student seeking your first Bachelor's degree after a significant break in your studies, learn more about the Osher Foundation Re-Entry Scholarship and Crankstart Scholarship, including eligibility and how to apply.

• The Robert Noyce Scholarship for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) or computer science majors/graduates to become licensed to teach (grades 7-12) in high need school districts through the accelerated Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Secondary Education Program.  The scholarship provides eligible Vermont students with $20,000 per academic year, while out-of-state students are eligible for $32,000 per academic year. Within one year, students complete the MAT including a full-time teaching internship before earning licensure in their respective STEM teaching field.
• Recipients must teach two years in a high need school district for each year that scholarship funds are received.

The First Nations' Scholarship is a donor established scholarship fund supporting new or current UVM students who demonstrate interest in impacting communities of Indigenous peoples. This interest could be focused on pursuing work as a future educator, social service leaders, health practitioner, or any type of work that centers the well-being of indigenous students, families, and communities.

• Applicants must have financial need, demonstrated on the FAFSA, and demonstrate an interest in issues impacting communities of indigenous peoples.
• Preference is given to students pursuing a degree in UVM’s College of Education and Social Services and to students who identify as Indigenous/Alaskan Indigenous.
• Application deadline for the 2023-24 year is February 17, 2023.
• Students may reapply for the scholarship for future years; there is no automatic renewal.
• The amount of this scholarship varies per recipient and per year, based on financial need and the availability of funding.

• The majority of funding available within the University is awarded as part of the main financial aid awarding process each year.
• Students who encounter an emergency financial crisis or who have exhausted all options within their financial aid package but still need additional financing should contact Student Financial Services directly to speak with a counselor.
• Some colleges and schools within the University have funding available to support research, internship, or educational travel opportunities. If you are interested in those types of opportunities, please contact your Dean's Office or Student Services team to inquire about available resources. Students should also connect with the Career Center regarding internship award opportunities, as well as the Office of Fellowships, Opportunities & Undergraduate Research regarding potential research support.
