Department Awards

At the end of each year, the English Department awards outstanding students with a number of departmental awards at the department's honors day. Students interested in the Allbee, Pinta, Pope, or Wainwright awards should speak with their English instructors about how to compete for these awards.

Samuel N. Bogorad Memorial Award for the Outstanding Senior in English:

Samuel N. Bogorad taught English at the University of Vermont from 1946 to 1982. In his honor, the Bogorad Award is given to the most outstanding senior majoring in English.

Marion Berry Allbee Award for Excellence in Composition:

These awards for outstanding non-fiction writing are given through a fund established by Dr. Roger Allbee, UVM College of Medicine, in memory of his wife, UVM Class of 1931.

The Dugan Foley Memorial Award was established in 1995 in remembrance of Dugan Foley, and goes to a junior who is pursuing film studies.

Dugan Foley Memorial Award:

The Dugan Foley Memorial Award was established in 1995 in remembrance of Dugan Foley, and goes to a junior who is minoring in film studies.

 Huck Gutman Award:

This award honors Professor Huck Gutman who taught English at UVM for 47 years. He served as Chair of the English department and taught courses in poetry of the 19th and 20th centuries, American literature, and modernism. This award is to recognize an excellent student of American literature or the reading of poetry.

 

 

Willard B. Pope Award:

In honor of Dr. Willard Pope, Emeritus Professor of English, this award is given to a junior or senior who excels in the study of Romanticism or Shakespeare.

Benjamin B. Wainwright Award:

In honor of Professor Wainwright, who taught at UVM from 1925 to 1963, this prize is given to the student who submits the best poem each year.

 English/Film and Television Studies Symposium: Essay Awards

The Tom Marmet Essay Award:

This essay award honors the memory of English major Tom Marmet, who was tragically killed in Washington D. C. months after delivering a paper at the first annual English/FTS symposium and graduating from UVM in 2018. In memory of Tom, who had a special interest in gender and social justice, one outstanding essay in Cultural Studies (broadly understood) will carry the distinction: “The Tom Marmet Award for Outstanding Scholarship in Cultural Studies.”

 

The Thomas Roderick Valley Essay Award:

This essay award to honors the memory of Thomas Roderick Valley, a former UVM double major in English and Theater who passed away after a battle with cancer in 2018. Thomas’s family has a special connection to English since Thom’s mom, Jeanne Valley, was also on our staff for some years. In memory of Thom, who was an enthusiastic, creative and engaged student in English, one outstanding essay in Literary Studies will carry the distinction: “The Thomas Roderick Valley Award for Outstanding Scholarship in Literary Studies.”

 

Samuel N. Bogorad Memorial Award:

An outstanding senior is selected via faculty reccomendations. There is no application process for students.

 

Marion Berry Allbee Award:

Awards are based on nominations by instructors for excellence in composition by an undergraduate.

 

Douglas A. Pinta Award:

The Douglas A. Pinta memorial Award was established in honor of a UVM graduate who passed away unexpectedly shortly after graduating. It is presented to a student for excellence in creative writing.

 

Dugan Foley Memorial Award:

Each year a junior in Film and Television Studies is nominated via faculty recommendations. There is no application process for students.

 

Willard B. Pope Award:

A senior or junior will be selected via faculty nominations. There is no application process for students.

 

Benjamin B. Wainwright Award:

This prize is submission based. Look out for a call for poetry via email and on our website in late spring.
