Abby Augarten, Agronomy Specialist

Abby comes from the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she completed an MS degree performing on-farm soil health and ecosystem services research.  Previously, she was a research and outreach specialist with UW Extension and their Discovery Farms program, where she coordinated the Nitrogen Use Efficiency Project.  She also served two years in the Peace Corps in Senegal as a sustainable agriculture extension agent.  Abby will lead a portfolio of agronomy outreach and technical assistance work in the Champlain Valley and support emerging work in the Connecticut River Valley.  Her focus areas include farm management, agronomic field crop production, and natural resource conservation practices to improve farm viability and surface water quality in the Lake Champlain Basin.

Carly Bass, Grazing Specialist

Carly brings a diverse background and wide-ranging agricultural experience to UVM Extension.  She has worked on several commercial farms across New England and internationally, as well as conducting nutrient management work for Champlain Valley Agronomics in New York.  She has a BS in Animal Science from University of New Hampshire and recently completed a MPS in Animal Science at Cornell University.  Carly will provide technical assistance, outreach and education to farmers in Addison County and southward into Southern Vermont.

Anna Elewski, Soil Health and Water Quality Outreach Specialist

Anna recently moved to Vermont after working on a small organic farm near Mount Hood, Oregon. Before farming, Anna worked for the U.S. Geological Survey doing salmon conservation research on the lower Columbia River. Anna earned a bachelor’s degree in biology with a concentration in conservation ecology from Vassar College in 2021. Anna’s work will focus on natural resource conservation and agronomy outreach to support farmers in the Lake Champlain Basin. Anna is passionate about building sustainable food systems and community-centered responses to the climate crisis.

Karen Gallott, Administrative Assistant

Karen Gallott

Karen grew up in Ithaca, N.Y. and worked for the Department of Pomology at Cornell University. She moved to Stillwater, Oklahoma where she worked in the Departments of Agriculture and then Engineering Technology at Oklahoma State University.  After moving to Vermont, she spent 11 years working as the assistant manager for West Meadows Farm, a 25-acre commercial apple orchard in New Haven, Vt. with a herd of Scottish Highland cattle.  Her other lifetime experiences include 20 years “horsing around” with horses, being a professional florist; development assistant, event planner; assistant town clerk, as well as 15 years as clerk for the New Haven Development Review Board and a Civil War Cavalry re-enactor. Karen currently lives in New Haven, Vt. with her husband, two cats and Welsh Corgi named Rowan.
