Ernesto L. Ebratt was born in Barranquilla, Colombia and moved to the United States in 2001 to teach high school Spanish. He earned his M.A. in Spanish from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and his Ph.D. in Spanish with a concentration in Latin American, Caribbean, and U.S. Latino Studies from SUNY Albany. His dissertation is entitled Cuerpos femeninos en competencias de mujeres o “reinados” en Colombia: 1991-2018. He has taught Spanish at the University of Arkansas and the University of Connecticut and became a lecturer of Spanish at UVM in 2006. Ernesto is currently a Senior Lecturer of Spanish and has taught elementary, intermediate, and advanced courses for the Department of Romance Languages and Cultures. He has also taught Spanish for Social Work and Health through the Continuing Education program, headed La Tertulia (the Spanish conversation group), and has been nominated several times for the Maurice Kroepsch Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Since 2010, Ernesto has served as an AP Table Leader and Reader (on-site and online) in the annual AP Reading organized by the College Board and ETS (Educational Testing Services). Ernesto has also served as an AP syllabus reviewer for the College Board since 2020. He is also a certified rater for the AAPPL test (Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages) administered by the ACFTL (American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages).

Ernesto’s research revolves around gender/women’s studies, body politics, globalization and neoliberalism, and women's embodied experiences in Latin American contexts (particularly in Colombia). His work addresses a broad set of topics of transnational significance related to female embodiment and women’s bodies under neoliberalism, particularly how gender, race, class, ethnicity, and nation along with cultural norms of femininity and beauty, violence, and activism shape the social experiences of women.
