Barton--The Northeast Regional 4-H Horsemanship Clinic, held June 22-24, provided a fun opportunity for area 4-H'ers to fine tune their riding skills and learn what judges are looking for in the show ring.

The event was sponsored by University of Vermont Extension 4-H and the Northeast Region 4-H Horse Comittee at the Orleans County Fairgrounds in Barton. Taylor Evans, Danville, instructed the English riders while Joyce Benway, St. Johnsbury, taught the Western riders. Barb Kristof, also from St. Johnsbury, worked with the basic beginners.

In addition to riding and fitting and showmanship lessons, the young equestrians took part in a general knowledge test, an all-day horse show and decorated clipboards to use for future 4-H competitions including quiz bowl and hippology. The clinic also was open to 4-H'ers without horses who participated in lessons and the show on Sunday with a borrowed horse or pony and attended a workshop on TPR (temperature, pulse, respiratory rates).

Laura Mount, Westfield, and Lindsey Wood, South Kirby, were presented with the Shelby Noyes Memorial Sportsmanship Award, given in memory of a Concord 4-H'er who passed away in 2002 due to injuries from a horse accident. The recipients were chosen by fellow competitors and adult club leaders for demonstrating the highest level of sportsmanship at the clinic.

The Wildlife Warriors 4-H Club of St. Johnsbury earned the best overall score for stable management for the third year in a row, winning a bucket of horse-related items for club members to share. Clubs were evaluated throughout the weekend on the tidiness of their stall and stable area and condition of tack.
